Look at your plugs and read them. 40+ mpg plug will be light tan color and no black soot. Will post a picture of one.

      • Gas cap Rubber Seal 1976-84 XS650

This one from Mike's XS is correct. 2M0-24641-00-00 is the OEM one. It will cost twice as much, but will last at least 20 years instead of two.

When you replace the seal, your tank is likely to no longer vent as the vent filter is rotten. I replaced mine with a tiny piece of Scotch-Brite.

Purchased from Partzilla as soon as I saw the post! They didn't show that seal on the XS1100SG part listing only the full cap (discontinued) or I would have purchased one long ago. Thanks again Marty!

The XS1100SH fiche shows the cap broken down. Some of the XS650 fiches show it broken down as well.

Don't forget the vent filter. I changed my seal and ran out of gas with an almost full tank. A good filter is required.

                  XSFolks,
I did a little testing the last couple days. I filled to the tippy-top, fortunately no leaking as I do not have Partzilla cap seal yet. Low fuel started flickering at 97 miles. Filled up at 107. Based upon the amount of fuel taken vs. mileage I'm getting only 30.5 mpg. This is all one-up driving and pretty much keeping to the speed limits.

My plugs do look pretty good with only the very slightest hint of soot. BUT, as stated I was seeing a good bit of soot in the tail pipes. I made an adjustment to the carbs (in 1/2 turn leaner on each) before the test. Doesn't seem to have had any effect. I may go a little further?
I'm at 1-3/4 turns out from fully seated at this time on all carbs. Sync is perfect across the board. Floats are within 1mm of each other and at proper height.

                    Hi Kurt,

Last MPG check on an SF was 36 with 2 up and 40 solo. Mostly straight and some small twisties. I will not get my best mileage if on an all day mountain twisty ride, but it will not be less than 34-35. Plugs are quite lean appearing. I frequently use non- ethanol 90 octane fuel, but not always. Upgrades include Dyna coils, Iridium plugs, and K&N air filter.

All carb parts are stock and Mikuni brand. Floats are adjusted to the lowest (in the bowl) setting by Yamaha manual. Lowest setting insures a leaner burn, no fuel leaks into carb throat when static, and better fuel consumption. Needle jet clips are in the standard location.

From a static test of 3 different float settings (all within Yamaha range), I found that over a 24-48 hour period on each test, that there would be some weeping of fuel into the carb throats except for the lowest setting. Fuel was left on the entire time. This was done in the winter, so I would guess that there would be more weeping at higher temps. I'm guessing that everyone's mileage will differ. But, the bikes are capable of the 40 mpg achievement. I have an old publication where the test riders got this mileage as was claimed by Yamaha.

I do notice a lot of posts here where guys are getting 25-30 mpg. I have to assume that this is a combination of riding habits and tuning.

                    Plugs look like this:

                    • Idle mix screws only affect the idle circuit. Once the throttle gets twisted the butterflies open and it's all about fuel level, jet sizes, needle position and air flow/restriction. This is where pods and non stock pipes get people in trouble. You've got to make sure those carbs are dialled in.

Received from Partzilla and part number on package is correct. Won't fit my cap. Not even close. Does a SH have a different cap? It's listed for an SH but not for an SG?

                                Kurt,

Hope you can make it. As previously posted, some of us Atlanta riders will be staying overnight Thursday Sept 24 at Days Inn, Cornelia (just off I-985 / US23 on Level Grove Road). E-Z to find with convenient fuel and a Waffle House just across the street. Don (from Tallahassee) and I will be meeting Brent & Marty up there on Friday around 9:30AM. Along with any other Florida riders that are coming up for the Rally. btw: Days is like $60 with tax.

But first I'm riding out to Utah with Stewart. Will break off at Zion National Park / Hurricane UT on 16th and get to Atlanta on maybe 22nd. With SE Rally that will make a 5,000 mile September. Not bad. Hope to maybe make a short howdy visit to Motoman & Motowoman on Sunday 13th if they are up for visitors. I'll be 2 or 3 days ahead of Stewart coming back so he will not make the SE Rally.

So we hope you get your XS working to your satisfaction so you can bring it to the SE Rally. Ride up Thurs pm to Cornelia and beat the nasty Friday Atlanta traffic.

                                See ya,
