Well I got everything on except for fork seals. Still need to bleed front brakes (stainless lines). Gonna pick up some hose for that tomorrow. Put mikes coils on, wires and ends, new plugs. Geezers rectifier, new cables and handgrips. Im just a week behind schedule . I learned last weekend to not try to work on your bike if your on call.

Today I went through the carbs, did the XV920 float valve mod. Tomorrow night new skins. It's been a busy winter here,
-new starter clutch
-new main and rod bearings
-venturer tensioner mod
-xv920 float valve mod
-tapped and plugged the oil gallery 'cork' under the stator cover
-changed oil pump, it prolly ate the mains.
-polished everything that doesn't move. polishing really blows.

Hey Randy what's so special about the XV920 float valves? Where did you get them ?Originally posted by randy View PostToday I went through the carbs, did the XV920 float valve mod. Tomorrow night new skins. It's been a busy winter here,

well, you have an '80 so I'm not sure it's an upgrade for you, but the '78-'79 carbs have all metal float needles. The XV920 has a viton tipped needle and it has the threaded seat that the earlier carbs use. I got them from Zanotti's. Don't be tempted to order them from Parts n more, theirs don't have a filter screen on 'em. IIRC, 81xsproject posted the mod a while back.

After supper last night I did my 1st oil change since the rebuild. I finally got my petcock rebuild kit & did that - orginally I just took them apart ( quite a few days ago) & cleaned them & put them back on. Please Use Diver Rays trick of die-electic grease when you put it back together - I didn't know that at the time - dry "O" ring tore & it leaked on the one side - did it again last night with new stuff & used the grease - perfect. Man alive what a difference with the new rubber in there - smoooth. - dan'81 XS1100 LH - Midnight Special - been lookin' a long time for this one.

Took the carbs off one SF. Needed to see how much adjustment was left between the carbs for synking. Reset those and should have em back on tonight.
Little further along taking apart an G for paint and a few possible mods. Sure seems to take longer to do stuff now a days.

81 - got the carbs all set, replaced the too short throttle cable with a spare I had around. Changed the oil, put a crush washer under the drain bolt so it would stop leaking. Put on 2 new spark plug boots (2 were bad) and clipped a bit off all the wires to ensure good contact, replace all the spark plugs with new. Checked the ignition timing.
79 - changed the oil and filter, tried to get motivated to do the front brakes, but realized I didn't have any brake fluid.1979 xs1100 Special -

I replaced my rear wheel and tire, did some lube and took her out for a good spin. Dang it has been a long winter. She walked up to 110 with out too much flogging. I did notice I have a little stumbling as it is coming off the idle circuits at around 4000 and also at 7000 rpm. In both cases it happens across a few hundred rpms at most. I know the 4000 mark is due to carberation, but I haven't pinned down what is going on at 7000.

Hey Fred Funny as usual - nothing gets buy. But y'know my Dad's only words of advise when I left home was that "he never believed in washing his feet with his socks on". Maybe thats why I got married real young hehe - Dan'81 XS1100 LH - Midnight Special - been lookin' a long time for this one.

back on theme, today I managed to salvage the inside out exhaust nut that had the stud busted off in it, re-tapped the other 7 and died down the 2 studs that came out with the nuts to clean the threads up; made a new stud from a long bolt.
I also managed to get the exhaust all taken apart at the joints. Got mad and cut the clamps off. Can get new stainless ones that have accessible fasteners.Fred Hill, S'toon
