What did I do to my Bike today?

I fixed the leak in my back tire. Does anyone else have the back tire leak around one of the bolts in the rim or at the valve stem cuz mine would not hold air in the tire. I listened and could here the air leaking at both place. I tried to tighten the days lights out of the nuts but still leaked. I kept adding air and added washers to the bolts and valve stems to see if I would be able to get the leaks to go away. Today i was not able to here the leaks after working on it so when I get home I hope the tire will still be up to pressure. Ideally I would take it town and have this guy I know fix it but I want to make sure the tire will keep air long enuff to get to town (about 25 miles.) Anyways, i will tackle the fuse box mess next. It needs help.

Air leaks from those bolts is not a good thing, considering those are rim locks for a tube type rim. Either the tube is leaking or there is no tube in your tube type rim. I'd have it checked out ASAP.

        It's been a busy winter

I turned the ole girl over and pulled her tranny apart. Did the dremel fix on 1st and 2nd gear (tungston carbide cutters helped a lot). Installed a new pan gasket.

Added a clutch steel. Wow that cork soaker is tight! Ima gonna have a Pop-eye left arm...I see a new clutch cable in my future.

Turned her back right side up and removed the starter. Found oil in there again. Sourced a new oil seal locally (for the planetary gear) and installed that...shouldn't have that problem again.

Drained and removed left front shock (just the lower) and replaced the seal. I need new dust seals, I'll replace those later. Drained the oil out of the right shock and re-filled both.

Replaced pads on right front, vacuumed new DOT 3 brake fluid into the whole front brake system.

It's supposed to be sunny and 73* tomorrow. Hopefully, tonight I can change the brake fluid in the front/rear foot brake sytem and re-install the Kerker 4-1 header.

Should be able to take her for a spin before going to bed.

My 11 y/o son and I installed replacement fenders (front & back) and I took him on his first real ride (something other than around the neighborhood) into downtown St. Louis to see the City Museum/World Aquarium. That place is CRAZY! I have to give him back to his mother tomorrow afternoon, so we'll be going on another ride in the morning. Not sure where yet though.

79 - Rode it to work/home, installed a hard wire GPS power source so I can plug in my "speedometer" instead of having to buy batteries all the time.

81 - Got the wrong carb kits in the mail, worked on the turn signal wiring a bit and found out that what I was hoping was a bad bulb is really some other issue.

I repaired the alternator wires with good waterproof connectors and dielectric grease. Installed my freshly cleaned carbs. Fired it up and synced the carbs. It ran ok.(just ok) Tried to colortune but #1 stopped firing. No Combustion just spark.
Cussed at it a few hundred times and called it a night. Woke up at 5am thinking about those damn carbs. I'll be back out first thing to cuss some more.

I forgot that I rebuilt the petcocks...couldn't shut off the gas when I pulled the tank off in preparation to flip her over.

Starter was hung up after replacing the seal. Wouldn't even turn. So, I push started her...four round trips up and down the driveway had beegshot huffing and puffing. Took her for a ride...tranny shifts smooth, and isn't clunking into 1st nearly as loudly as before the dremel fix.

Let her cool down before pulling the starter. Planetary gear set was cock-eyed. Took it apart, put it back together and tested her in the bench vise...no problem.

Rode her to work today. Haven't wrapped my wrist around the handle bar in 1st or 2nd yet...will do it on the way home.

                    74* and sunny...Woot!!!

Took the exhaust header off for what seems like the tenth time in a couple of days. The custom oil-cooler lines that I had made are leaking at the compression fitting down by the oil filter housing. There is hardly any room to tighten the fitting, and there is no access to the allen bolts that fit it to the cooler plate when the exhaust is on... SO

Pull the spaghettis, loosen the cooler hose arms, pull off the hoses, check the fittings, reinstall, start bike, watch oil stream from bottom of left hose..
Repeat. Maybe too tight?.. repeat.. Maybe too loose? repeat.. The hilarious part is that to get to the allen bolts, without a lift, involves kneeling down facing the rear of the bike and then tipping forward to the point where you are just about to lose balance and nose-dive into the puddle of oil under the bike, while trying to insert/ remove allen bolts with an extension screwdriver.

Finally noticed today that the guy who assembled the hose, used a crimper that made a series of flats around the pipe and oil was flowing around and under the compression fitting. Brought it back to him, told him to take the joint apart. I will clean it and solder the fitting on... That should do it.

                      I hope.

Well I have my new rear tire Metzler 880 Marathon and Dyno jet kit installed last week .I installed the mikesxs.com green coils with the yellow plug wires and Iridium plugs. I also did the 750 final drive mod and today was the first chance I had to take it for a run since everything has been installed. I am happy to say I am now averaging 43mpg that is up from the 32mpg I was getting before. I was cruising a lot at 130kph or around 80mph so I am very surprised at my gas mileage. It's nice all the cost of these upgrades will slowly be covered by the savings in fuel cost.

So it worked pretty well, but today I decided to take a longer ride. 20 miles in, I get the wobble again. So, I dropped a couple more pounds off of each tire and all was nice again.

Put about 50 miles on today, and the happy part (to me anyway) is that my MPG seemed to shoot up. Still over 1/2 tank.

I also, switched out my special bars for bars from a standard, going to give them a try on my long ride tomorrow, replaced the broken neutral switch, re-mounted my soft bags because the bracket I had was broken, and washed the bike.

Today I got my wiring harness back on after cutting out the headlight relay, the reserve lighting unit, and hooking up a separate switch to my headlight. I don't like to do stuff like that, but I think it was for the better. I know what I've got now. I fixed my turn signal switch and cleaned a bulb socket, so my signals are fixed. Everything is brighter than ever and I think it's running smoother too. Took it out for about a half an hour and cranked it up a bit. What a great bike. My self cancelers even worked. Felt good for some work to pay off. Now I'll step back and take a little break, get some miles on it.

Here's an updated pic of my bike. Painted the front wheel back to gold, put a base coat of paint on my rear fender.
