        Y'all pick a date and a spot and I'll try to be there.

        If everything works I'll be coming down from Washington and south out of Salt Lake to the Colorado Rally. When that happens kind of depends on when the rally happens.

        If it's in Canon City or somewhere thereabout on the wrong side of the slope I'd head east through Green River, Grand Junction, Rifle, up and over to Denver, then south to the rally.

        After the rally I'll have to play it by ear until you guys figure out a date.

            There are a couple good routes out of Canon City. Since I like mountain riding I would go west to Salida - a nice canyon ride - on Hwy 50 then catch 285 south to 114, then west again over North Pass, elevation 10,149. Continue west on 114 back up to Hwy 50, then east back toward Canon City via Monarch Pass (11,312) and Salida. Route is kind of lake a lasso.

            Canon City is not that far from Cripple Creek and Victor, old mining towns but now Cripple Creek has gambling casinos. You can take a mine tour in Cripple Creek or ride an old railway over to Victor. (Or ride the paved road between the two towns.) An old railway grade converted to auto traffic connects Canon City to Cripple Creek. Last time I was there part of this route was paved, part was not. Route goes through a gorge and is an interesting ride. Or, if you head west from Cripple Creek (or west then north from Canon City) you can go to Guffey, another old town. Last time I was there we ate at a nice little restaraunt. Been several years, though, since I was through Guffey.

            Another area attraction south of Canon City is the Sand Dunes National Monument. Long ride through semi-desert but the dunes are an interesting stop. Fee to get into the park, though. Not much in the way of amenities in the immediate area.

            So you can have your choice of routes and terraine; all have some attraction and are worth a visit. My recommdation, depending on temperatures, are the high country passes west of Canon City up near Salida.

              ........that's a good option for that location Jerry. Wouldn't be far from runnin' up north from Canon to top of PikesPeak for a 'short ride' either...........folks from other countries come here just for THAT particular experience alone......plus folks get a chance to see just how 14,000ft.elev. kills the power......of just about anything, including themselfs.

              Definitely alot of riding options AND variety of scenery, no matter what direction except east of I-25.

                I was looking at the 50 on Google Maps but I wasn't sure what kind of ride it'd be: good ride to Canyun City or an all-day excursion.



                BTW, is your appleattic account misfiring? The page hangs on load waiting for an image or the index at your appleattic site and clicking a link in your Sig times out.

                P.S. There's really a town in Colorado named "Exit"?

                  50 makes for a SWEET scenic ride from here to Canyon...as good as or better than you've already ridden here. South from here to Montrose.....hang a left and follow your nose......you know the drill.....bout 4-5hr. ride. Colo.50 on four lane gives you high desert rolling hills to Montrose as you already know. From there, a bit mountainous with 15+mi. beside BlueMesaLake to Gunnison and up over MonarchPass on the whereever..........

                    FWIW thanks to the miracle of Google Maps I found a Salida (Exit), Ca. It's between Modesto (Modest) and Manteca (Lard) on the '99.

                    You can't fight Big Government or Big Railroad because Manteca was actually supposed to be named Monteca but the railroad made a typo. The typo stuck and became the official name.

                          Thanks, Jerry. It looks like it's just me then. DNS resolves but there's 100% packet loss and tracert dies at "cogentco.com" which seems to be a problematic 'net host that's aggravating a few gamers too. It was working last month so hopefully it'll just go away.

                          I keep forgetting that the Pike's Peak ride is now paved all the way. It used to be gravel and not a lot of folks like riding on gravel so I forget to mention it as a possible route. It is a good idea for folks who arrive early or stay late.

                            Depending on time of year it is very common to get cloud build-up in the afternoon and even a few showers. August is the 3rd wettest month in Colorado. For that reason it is often better to get your high altitude rides in early in the day and stick to lower elevations during late afternoons or evenings. That would mean the Peak first then the AF Academy.

                            I ride many backroads and many passes and areas of interest that are not paved. First did Pike's PeaK in '77 or '78, two-up on a Honda 450 when the route was still gravel. Also did the Old Fall River Road in Rocky Mt. National Park which is all gravel, Kebler Pass, Douglass Pass, and several others just to name a few. However, for a rally, probably not a good idea to have much gravel in the main route.

                            BTW, the Pike's Peak Route is a toll road. Back in '01 when we did our first Colorado Rally I arranged for a group discount which saved a few bucks on the admission. Regular rate is $12.00 per adult, group rate is $8.00 per adult. Group rates must be approved 10 days in advance or more. Riding time is rated at 2 hours but with scenic stops and visiting the gift center at the summit, maybe getting a snack, you can easily take 4 hours to get up and back.

                                ......or even white stuff. Last year over LaborDay, two days before SWMBO and I went up through Estes Park and over TrailRidgePass through RockyMountainNationalPark, it was closed due to some 8in. of white stuff. No sign that was the case when we got there.

                                I remember some 32yrs. ago riding over WolfCreekPass over LaborDay weekend on my Venturer coming home(Durango) from a three day loop around state(was the last time had been over TrailRidge on a scoot), it was snowing with some 4in. of wet, slick snow on road. Didn't stop me, as I was still invincible.....then.

                                Very possible(gotta love that non-commital term) Rdmcguy is gonna announce a mid-July XSessive 'herding of cats'. DAMHIK.
