    • Is this just a poll or do you have it designed and prototype made yet? I would be very interested in seeing the design and pictures. If you do not produce the adapter, would you be willing to share your thoughts and design and maybe I can have one turned out. My brother is one hell-of-a machinist.

If you have it and are selling them, put me down for one. Let me know when and where I can get it.

      Thanks

      • TC has made and sold bunches of them. There is a pic of the set up near the top of page one of this thread.

        • and just for everyone's information, it also mounts just fine on my 91 Venture Royale, no trickery needed.

          • I've had mine for a couple days now and today I got around to getting a filter for it. I went to the local NAPA and they cross-referenced the filter to one that I thought was rather small.

I explained that the filter needs to have a built in by pass and the parts guy looked up other filters with the same specs. One was longer and a bit larger around and the other one was short and fat. I went with the short and fat filter, it's a NAPA Gold #1390 and the other one was a NAPA Gold #1344.

I'm hoping to install it this weekend but I'm just getting over the flu and I might stall it for a week or two.

One more thing, I don't like the idea of using silicone sealer anywere it touchs hot oil so I'm going to use Yamabond #5 to seal mine.

I'll post back if I have any problems but if I do, odds are it'll be my fault...

I am interested in this spin-on oil filter cover you talk about here from DK.

Do you have a link to the company that sells these? Any other contact info?

After looking for similar item on JCW, they had one that fit on both a Harley, and the Yamaha V-star. However, the JCW one was a 2 part unit, and the base was designed to fit on the MOUNT that the oil filter screws into. That MOUNT is smaller than the one I made for the XS1100, so not sure if the JCW would fit ours. I'm now not sure how the DK one will fasten, whether it fastens to just the filter, or also like the JCW one, and somehow fastens to the mount of the filter!?

I just thought that it would have a large band that would tighten around the filter as you turned a screw into the cover!?!?

                  • Beating myself up!

                    Well, Jesse,

I'm not "procrastinating" myself, Xmas hit the budget kinda heavy, recovering, and my B'day is next week, so SWMBO has said I can get the metal cutting bandsaw I have been wanting and needing to be able cut those nice slices out of my aluminum log so I can get back into production.

Also, wasn't sure IF the bandsaw that I could get for about $200.00 from Northern Tool would work, cause it was stated to have a 4" x 6" rectangle capacity...the 6" vertical, or a 4.5" round. The log I have is 5.25" diameter, and I had not been able to see one in person....they weren't in the store, but then a few weeks ago, they had one on display, and there was PLENTY of space beyond the 5.25" wide size, just will have to make a VISE bracket to hold that larger size log compared to the vise built in to the bandsaw!! Plus, I'm only cutting 6061 aluminum, not SOLID STEEL, so it should be able to handle that .75" larger size. It has 3 speeds, and I'll take it easy and not try to force it too fast!

Thanks for asking, I am wanting to keep providing these things, but the milling/lathing is still in my learning curve! Will keep all posted on my eventual success!!

Hey thanks, TopCat, I really appreciate the info!

I designed a spin-on oil filter adaptor for a series of Kawasaki engines and there have been a few comments raised concerning the "appearance of vulnerability" since it just looks like a target to get whacked. In real life, this is rare since the locations of these filters on those engines are to the rear and tucked up pretty well.

But, if there was an easy way to put some sort of flak shield on the filter can itself (made from carbon fiber composite, polypropylene or polycarbonate even), this might soothe some fears a little. These covers appear to be cosmetic in nature and probably are much too pricey for the frugal minded.

BTW, I have a good resource for spin-on oil filter choices for your adaptor (and mine) if you would like to see it. Let me know.

Mine is still sitting on the floor next to my desk. I had some health problems over the winter and I haven't felt like installing it. I haven't riden or worked on my bike since September.
