Got tank cured and petcocks installed. Started breaking down rim to put new Michelin Commander on it (to match the back one I bought at XS SE). And all new battery cables with additional battery to engine ground.

Should be riding by next weekend.

Good to see Great Ranger getting fixed. I don't remember ever seeing it with a Windjammer. Is that new?

How are you doing on the 81.

      • Fired it up after mounting new mufflers. Getting the right adapters to size down to the headers (2.125 to 1.75) proved a challenge, but sounds great and looks good.

Got windshield on the fairing and front fender mounted.

Should be able to test ride it tomorrow.

        • took the bike completely apart again. I am happy with how the fender sits, how the rack looks and the seat shape. I had one bit left to cut off the frame : the left side center stand mount. the PO had broken the other side off and I had never thought to check this side before. with my motorcycle jack, I have no real need for the center stand, though I may re-make them at some point.

anyway, i flipped the frame over to grind off the remaining mount. as i started i'm thinking to myself "that's not a weld, that is silicone. same here. and those are just two little tacks on the sides". so i ground off the tacks and whacked the mount with a hammer to reveal this:

so i took the mount, chopped it up and ground it down to make a plug for the hole.

and now you almost can't tell it was fixed. I may do a couple more surface passes to build up the strength again. after it cools down more i'll decide.

          gotta love POs

          • everything is ready to go out and be blasted, then time for paint. just have to wait until i get the replacement VIN decal in my hands before I get them blasted, you know, just in case it can't be duplicated.

            • You still have the VIN stamped into the neck. Shouldn't that suffice?

              • you know, i've never actually checked if it will or not. i just assumed that something like that would be required. guess i should check it out, maybe save myself $75. it obviously isn't a concourse rebuild so if i can get away without it, i will.

                  • You might also ask your blaster if he can mask the sticker off. A rubber tape applied to the decal will resist the blast media, but the decal might not resist the temperature of powder coat curing. If you are painting, then no problem, you just mask it off again.

                    • Mask it with modeling clay. It will cure in heat instead of the decal perhaps.

                        • Pulled the oil pan and re-aligned the gasket to fix the leak. Pulled tge petcock and bent the washer to fix the constant leak, and removed carbs and re-tightened the floatbowl screws that I forgot about. Bike is running well. Not sure I will end-up doing an LED upgrade on turn signals or headlight. Probably just a fork brace and fusebox upgrade.
