  • Cleanin'....

Finally took the E 'modder' frame to the powdercoaters', dug the motor I'm going to use in it out and started cleaning it...

    [IMG][/IMG]

This thing is nasty; it looks like the PO ran it (for a while...quite a while) with a leaking CCT, and to add insult to injury, ran through some fresh road oil somewhere along the line; I found more than a few chunks of gravel stuck to the front. And never cleaned any of it off... it's thick and baked on...

It checked really good; compression was between 190 and 200 in all cylinders. After I get the big chunks off, I'll adjust the valves, install an auto CCT, and pull the pan to look at the gear dogs in the trans.

    • Checking the center stand welds didn't help

Today I rode to the welding shoppe' but I forgot it's a holiday so no one was there but me.

There is rust on the top of the weld that used to hold the left-hand center stand bracket to the frame. The upper flat part of the bracket fits up against the frame tube but there is a small gap where water can get between the bracket and the frame and you cannot see the weld.

I had been checking the center stand brackets and other frame welds when I put air in the tires but there was no sign of any problem at all until the hidden part of the weld broke. The center stand collapsed as I was kick starting the engine and the weld on the right-hand bracket popped cleanly out of the frame as the stand folded forward and the bike fell over.

The center stand is spider-bungee'd to the luggage rack for now so I took a picture of the left-hand bracket. You can see corroded metal on the hidden side of the weld and clean, freshly broken, metal and paint on the other side.

I haven't taken any pictures of the holes in the frame or the right-hand bracket.

Yes, the Yamaha factory line-chimp struck again so that's Plan B and until it's done I'm riding Shank's Mare.

The P.O. literally ripped out the center stand on Bush, the '79 Special, so Plan A was to get new brackets welded on before tearing down Columbo to fix the engine. Now both of the frames have ragged holes in them so I can't ride either one.
