Polished the filter canister too. I know they are practically invisible, but it is like new underwear- no one knows but it still feels good. Polishing also makes it easier to clean. [IMG][/IMG]

        Hi James,
That looks more like a full blown restoration than a 2nd gear fix

        • Put a new battery in this afternoon. Amazing! My bike has never started this well! Always had to crank for a bit before she would start, today I had barely tapped the starter and she fire right up! Wish I had done this sooner! Battery I had was at least 3 years old, and came with the bike so who knows.

Now hopefully I can get some time to ride it this weekend.

I got the paint at the local O'Reilly's for about 10 clams. All I did was scuff up the old chrome (more than it was already was), clean it off with acetone and paint as directed. A good look for a little $.

                • Took the white kutter bags and double saddle seat off. Found a nice stock seat for too much but bought it anyway and I got a set of hard bags off flea bay; one indigo blue and the other is BLACK??? WTF?

                  • Installed a copper washer on the final drive drain plug. This appears to have cured the drip/leak. Never simple though as i thought i would just hold one finger over the drain, like the little Dutch boy while removing the old washer and installing the new. The old washer was so jammed I needed two hands which ofcourse meant a trip to the store for more oil.

                    • Rode my 78E about 50 miles to see if seafoam would help with the popping on decel I have this spring. Bike has always run perfectly without the popping but it is very obvious this spring. Thinking something may have gummed up over winter but will check the usual like exhaust leaks etc. 8500rpm and triple digits were the word of the day. I love these bikes.

                      • Just finished unpacking the rig after my 2500 klm round trip to the Aussie National Rally this weekend past. The old girl didn't miss a beat!
                        Gotta love these XS's!
Due to work commitments, I couldn't get away till 2.00 Friday arvo, rode through the night with a 3 hour delay due to fuel availabilty at a remote western town. Arrived at about 9.00 in the morning. Enjoyed meeting the other XS enthusiasts, we held an impromptu Nation XS11 workshop session with much carb synching and colortuning with everyone sharing their experiences and information, culminating in a shuttle bus taking us into town ( so we could enjoy quite a few ales without risk of driving under the influence) where the XS dinner was held and awards were handed out, then shuttled back where a late night was spent watching video footage of the days ride around the fine town of Bourke.
Arose in the morning to a hearty BBQ breakfast, said our farewells and headed for home. Left at about 0900. I had company for the first 700 odd klms but they had the time to split the trip, so I left them just after dark at Inglewood, then pressed on the rest of the way home through the night. Only had a couple of near misses with the wildlife but all was good and I pulled up at 0315 Monday morning. A quick coffee and a hot shower, then into bed. Had to work that night. XScellent weekend all round!!

                        • I replaced the backrest cushions on my bike last night. The 30 y/o vinyl had cracked and really started to look old, so I decided to try my hand at some custom upholstering. Using the existing pieces as a pattern, I made a new pad for the Vetter trunk, and one for the sliding backrest I use when there is no passenger. Took me 2 nights of sewing, but I'm pretty happy with the results. The first picture shows the original pad on the left, and the new one on the right. All the others are of the new one from different angles.

I'm always open for a new project. If the money's right, I'd be willing to make more - especially now that I know how! I only have the pattern for the Vetter trunk and the adjustable backrest though.

                              • My backrest looks like that but i could take measurements. I dont think my metal piece is as sharp a turn as that one. Mine is more rounded and doesnt come over the seat. I can take my big touring seat off with the sissy bar/backrest still on.
