  • My setup

I have a small drill press from HF and a set of grinding tools for the Dremmel with diamond grit from HF that cost me $14.00. Set the table on a slant and the grinder in the chuck at max fast speed and hold the gear to get really good control on depth and angle for all the sides. Really makes a professional job. The last set I did I had to do it this way 'cause my Dremmel died and it was SSSsssooooooo much easier....

How long did those Harbor Freight diamond bits last? I've been tempted to get some, but it seems that HF cutting tools are not the worlds best. Their drill bits are even worse. CZ

      • Long

I have the complete set of about 15 bits. There are three that are the perfect shape for the job and I have done 3 trannies with one that is still good.

I finished tearing down the engine that was swapped out, and then wrapped the rust sensitive parts in paper sacks and bread bags and stored them in 2 milk crates. Maybe I will try my hand at rebuilding one of these and have a spare motor if mine goes kablooie.

You don't say how long you intend to store the parts, and I don't know the average relative huminity in Elk Grove, but you might want to rethink the plastic bags around the parts.
Either let them breath, so that the temperature swings don't cause condensation, or cover them in cosmoline, or grease. At least the working surfaces.
Just an opinion, mind you, so suit yourself. CZ

                • In this area parts that can't breath WILL rust, but generally if allowed to breath unless you have them in a storage area that is really humid they won't do too bad (I'm about 1/2 hour north of him).

Put the parts in a shed though and they will rust pretty fast, but in my garage I've had no problem at all with any rust over several years, and even on my XS400 that I stored for 13 years only the unprotected case parts really gave me any real problem, the other parts stayed in pretty good shape.

                  • Erratic running float

levels have been causing frustrations tuning. Finially having a high enough fuel level in #4 while running that small amout of fuel was coming out of back of carb. Having static float levels all identical, was still showing differences in actual running fuel levels between all four carbs, with #4 overfilling. Having the spring loaded needle valves, #4 in particular had to create more pressure to seal, raising the float against the spring more creating a higher fuel level. With as many times as the floats have been removed and adjusted, decided this time to chuck the float pins in my drill and with a tiny file removed the enlarged area near head of pin so I would'nt cringe removing the float pins with side-cutters. Odds were not in my favor chancing breaking a float pin post. Local dealer still showed needle valves and seats available from Yamaha, but the $100 price tag for all four deturred me. The K&L choice was available one maybe two days shipped. The latter is not my preference, but the $40 and not being jet related fit the bill alot better. Since the float levels, from experimenting have such a drastic effect on mix ratios, even a half millimeter change, that replacing the viton needles should simlify this process and reduce the arguing I've done with these carbs.
