  • Last day before I leave for Italy for work - returning the 18th to leave on 6kWUSCAN trip - finished my bags and trunk mount and changed oil and filter (synthetic Mobil 1 15w50 with no extra stuff below the circle!) and should be good til we get home.

I ordered (and hope it arrives in the next week or so before I get back) and new windshield for the Windjammer - I found I needed it to be taller to keep from having to slouch at speed - my head was buffeted so much over 60. I found one 3" taller which should bolt right on.

Everything else is ready to go I think - I wish I had more time to work out wiring up the Cycle Sound but just ran out....

Looking forward to seeing folks along the way and in Cali Rally.

    Here are the obligatory pics:

Dang John, that scoot looks good. Definitly will tag up with you all somewhere along the line, likely when your headed south from Sturgis. I'll make it work somewhere along that line. Presume you still usin' the 1832 cell number?

I don't understand the question...you mean prep when I painted? Layover between now and vacation? That is only 2 weeks away, during winter there is no real end to riding season in San Antonio....we ride year round.

Brant yes its the same number...look forward to it. Will be checking in along the trip. I plan to start a ride report thread.

Have a good time in both Italy and your bike trip.
Keep an eye on your oil level. At my last change I used 15/40 and consumption went up from when i used 20/50.

+1..........these air cooled motors have looser tolerances and don't far well with ligher weight oils, specially LD at a constant higher rpm.

Leaving Sturgis wednesday 8/7 for near denver/estes park area...heading south through colorado interior highways towards salida and albuquerque. Overnight thursday 8/8 in ABQ then east to lubbock area. Overnight friday then head on to san antonio saturday (here is where you would likely split back towards Tulsa).

Hi John, know your across the pond, but think I read where you all are not taking any tents. I fthat be the case, may wanna consider hitting Wally-World or such along the way for some tents. Likely need them by time you hit Sturgis. It'll either be hotter than a bi, or rain showers. Motel accommadations will NOT exist for some 150mi. radious of there, unless you have res. already. The main KOA there will never turn down tenters, no matter the crowd. Have friends here that frequent the happening, and have given me the scoop on what to expect. Down thru Colo., it'll be a hit and miss thing for motel accommadations this time of year, specially the ScenicByways you'll be riding. Their WILL be afternoon/evening showers this time of summer here, and as you know, they are NOT like a warm shower like in the south. Just a couple things to consider, specially from and including Sturgis and on down thru Colo. Bout only thing keepin' us from ridin' over TrailRidgePass thru RockyMountainNat'lPark is white stuff stickin' on the road.....yup, seen it snow many atime up there in summer, even to the point the road will close. Anyway, just a 'heads-up.

                    • Brant -

We have bedrolls - I had some custom sewn Old Cavalry style with waxed canvas for water resistance and they have big flaps including a head flap to keep out the water - we have a fly tarp to hang over a line if we need extra protection. Total weight is about equal to a tent and sleeping bag/pad setup but easier to handle and pack on bike.

There is a city campground in Rapid City that is free and you just need space to lie down next to the bikes so we should be good. I had a reservation at a hotel awhile back but I cancelled it - don't want these boys going soft on me at that point in the trip.

                      Thanks
                      John

                        • I'm not John but I can answer your question about the FD.

A Standard with the 17" rear wheel runs virtually the exact same RPMS as a Special with a 16" wheel and the FD mod. The mod drops your RPMs in high gear approximately 800 - 900 RPMs

                          • Got some XJ1100 air shocks on my bike last night. Put them on #3 with 20psi. Didn't lower the back any like I was hoping, but I'm looking forward to seeing how it rides with the upgrade.

Last things to do are cut the seat down, and put a system in my "cycle sound" cast and get put that in my fairing. Oh yeah, and I have a hole in the left muffler.

                            • I have mine set on 4 with 30 psi and that's about right for 190#. More air when it's loaded down.

They ride great and if you get the air pressure right for you they improve the handling in turns a lot.
