Just an ever so slight exhaust leak, pulling in cooler air may be attributing that right side popping. A definite suspect since pipes are 'tied' together at cross-over if bike carries stock exhaust. Two-to-one collector point is a common cracking area point on stock exhaust, dropping unitentionally off curb hitting exhaust, etc. Inspect closely around underside below heat shield.

I like the Avons for the front. Now avon Cobra, before Venom X. I put Harley air shocks on my XS. Just changed the rubber eyes and ground down the edge of eye if it was in the way of anygthing. Easy, ande SO nice tyo have shocks that work.
Today I checked compression...(did not warm it up first...error, may check again soon.) Yesterday I replaced right foot peg Again. Following Jetmeck Marty to XSeast in WV got one rubber peg cover...Following him on his XS 650 in North GA got another last weekend.

            • New Gears! (well almost, only 7600 mi.)

I scored the entire transmission innards on E-Bay from a bike that had less than 8000 miles. I have not have a fully working trans (no 2nd gear) since I bought it. Last summer first started to skip. Tried the dremel fix but all was to far gone. Installing ASAP. There are pics in my photobucket, check them out. Have a great summer.

                      • Today I rode my XS11 home from the shop. They put new fork seals on it, reassembled the front end with progressive springs I provided, and slapped an Avon tire on the front. The difference in the rideability is night and day. Still want to cut that monster king/queen seat down and put the 12"HD shocks on it that I have. But at least now I can ride it, even if I can see the tops of SUVs I pass on the dang thing! I told my bro in law it's so damn high it's like riding a pickup truck motorcycle!

                          • Never owned a V twin, and I oscillate between wanting one and not. I have a KZ650 that I lowered (with links) but even before that it still wasn't as high as the XS11. I think part of it might be the (padded?) saddleman cover on an already super padded seat. I wear 32" pants and I can barely put both feet flat on the ground on the bike. Just don't like sitting that high, it corners like a fresh terd on a hot day from that altitude. The full fairing pushing up the CoG doesn't help my confidence any. Though I'll admit it was much, MUCH better today after the front end work. Riding the bike went from scarey to actually pretty fun.

                            • You get the suspension right and it'll be good. The stock shocks on that XS are 11.5 in. so the 12 inchers aren't going to help.

I run XJ air shocks on my SG and they ride GREAT and improved the handling immensely.

Your best solution for the suspension issues, without spending the motgage payment on it, are XJ rear shocks and Venturer air adjustable forks.

The tires you run make a huge difference too, along with steering head bearing operation and adjustment and swing arm bearing operation and adjustment.

Don't blame the bike until all the factors are considered. My SG handles pretty freakin good

To the best of my knowledge no xs11 ever came standard with 11.5" eye to eye shocks. I've looked around a LOT and they're all 12.5" e2e. I know mine are and I know they're stock cause they're the same one that are shown in the user manual and they're .5" longer than the 12" shocks I bought. Stock Xj1100 shocks all seem to be 13" and at this point using them would mean being on my toes standing astride the bike.

The points about the steering head and swing arm bearings are very good ones. Every once in a while when i hit he right cracks in the road it feels the the front end and rear end of the bike want to go in different directions and I'm tempted to think its the swing arm bearing but I don't know anything about bearings and I just dropped my chunk-o-bike-money on the front end work.
