    • My 79 xs1100 special so far...

I have not figured out how to post a pic of my bike from my iPhone yet.
      But, as of today....
Frame chopped, lowered. Slight rake added.
Motor rebuilt, new piston rings, valve seals, friction plates, springs, valve seats redone, complete gasket replacement.
Carbs rebuilt, 145 main jets, 45 pilot jets.
      Push button start added.
      Single speedo gauge added.
Right side handle bar switch removed.
      New master cylinder.
      Complete caliber rebuild including pistons.
      12" ape hangers added.
      New chrome head light.
New front and rear Dunlap d404 tires.
      Painted rims.
It's all coming together. Did all the work myself so it kills me I can only blame myself.
I am now rebuilding wiring harness to remove what's not needed and to shorten harness.
Just thought I'd share a update.

wow sounds nice, Would have liked to see a blog or a thread on the build of this. Like how you changed the right side switch and all, chopped and lowered very cool. Hope you can get those pics up soon.

          • First ride this year

This winter's winterisation was to turn the gas taps to OFF, shove the rig into the back corner of the garage and put stuff on top of it.
Santa brought me a new back tire so I installed that mid January.
A month back I put the battery on charge. Cranked fine when I unhooked the charger but next day, no way. Only had that battery 7 years too!
Last week the replacement for that $40 el-cheapo car battery cost me $80!
Anyway, +17ºC today so bolted the new battery in, turned the gas & ignition on, pulled out the choke and pushed the button just to see if anything would happen or if it was carb cleaning time again.
Fired right up. Neglect seems to work. Yahoo! And on last year's gas too. Rode down to the Co-op to top the tank up.

            • I rebuilt the petcocks and needle seat to try to stop a gas leak. Last night, I managed to knock my gas tank off of a precarious perch on a bucket and dent the tank for the first time. Harsh language was used to no avail.

Don't feel too bad Larry, some three years back I replaced my Venturer's tank that the paint was starting crinkle on it. The replacement WAS in immaculate condition. I say was till I had set the seat atop the tail trunk rack, later walking by and bumping seat off and the lower side corner of seat pan hit tank in lower left side while it was parked back near rear wheel what I though was out of harms way. Nothin' to do but just chalk it up to another battle scar.............

                  • Bike work

Took the seat off and apart. Modified the seat frame to fit better, painted it, glued a strip of material around the base edge, glued on the foam, made a new cover, put on a thin slip of padding and put it all together.
Then I removed the fenders and the rear part of the exhaust, sanded and painted. This morning the paint has bubbles so will sand and paint again today. This weekend I will get the new sidecar delivered to my dock and assemble it, and bolt it to Yami.

Looks sweet, Wazi!! It's good to have another XJ in the club. They don't have as much power as the others, but it has plenty for me (more than enough to get in a lot of trouble). I'm going to post some pics of my mods soon. How many miles are on the clock?

                      • Bike work

Today I took the front forks off and the triple tree. Had plans to replace the bearings but did not have enough time. So I piled a bunch of grease on the dry bearings. I could feel the lumpy movement.
I will replace the bearings when I replace the forks. Forks are rusty and pitted.
I did not remove the front wheel, lifted the bike with a sky hook and withdrew the wheel and forks as a unit.
The wyres going in to the headlight bucket were routed all wrong so I fixed that mess.
I will pick up the new sidecar this weekend and attempt to assemble and install it to Yami.

She's got ~41k on the clock, I like to think it looks pretty good for that many miles!
Not as much power as the xs's? Whew, like you say, the xj has plenty of power for me

Post up the pics, would love to see them!

                          • Soldered that hole in my brother-in-law's tank. It took awhile to get the technique down so the solder did not just fall right through the hole.

Now I am being nice(er) and stripping paint and going to clean up the petcocks so he will be ready for summer riding.

                            Pics tomorrow.

                            • Here is Rising Sun - my 78E before I gave it to my brother in-law last fall.

Recently he found a crotch full of gas leaking - I think the PO must have plugged a hole on back of tank near seat with JB Weld or some epoxy that finally failed.

I soldered it closed and started wire wheel stripping it...

Then I got bored and tried to de-paint Europe but Italy got messed up...

Hours later I had it stripped, but had a small dent to fix and letting it dry to prime tomorrow.

Finished cleaning my XJ shocks and applied "Sharkhide" to keep it looking sharp.

                              Nice day.
