    • Rainy Day Sunday = Bunch of stuff done

So it rained (if you can call a heavy mist rain) all day sunday.
I swapped out the valve cover gasket and I cleaned up a lot of greasy/dirt off the engine and put my raptor ACCT in.
While I was in there, I measured my valve clearances and OH BOY, all 4 of my intakes are less than .10mm. That's the smallest my set of feeler gauges go to. So, I've got to get me some shims soon. I think I need a 255 and two 260's. Maybe this weekend I'll have more time to pull the cams off both bikes and swap shims around and get to the dealer to see if they have any to swap around.
I might still have a small oil leak at the cylinder base too, so, if I've got enough time this upcoming weekend, maybe I'll pull the jugs off too and replace that gasket also. (what a PITA that's gonna be)
Oh, on Friday, I did get the speedo swap out done. See my other thread on that.

Make sure you get 29mm and not 29.5 like I did when I swapped with the local Yammy dlr. Ground them down to fit and then found out that was a no-no. I had to go back in with the right ones.

          • With 86degrees and windy with 50+mph gusts, decided the shaded man-cave is the better place to spend some time. With that, gonna remove the carb bank and correct the RUNNING fuel levels as they are 4mm too low. Least the new float needles now have the running fuel levels the same in all four carbs, now just too low, and riding reflects that with low 30mpg on a 100mile test run and a bit 'mushy' upon acceleration.

I prepared the 850 final and installed it on Pathfinder. I hope it lasts longer than the 750 one did. When I opened up the 750 one I found 5 places where the teeth were missing from the ring gear, but I didn't see any peices in there. Do you suppose that I got it that way? It still was smooth except for one little spot on the ring gear.

                • Installed a top box from the Swap Meet at the OVM Rally last weekend. Paid $1 for it. It needs a little sanding and some Krylon spray paint for plastic, and it'll look great. It's deeper and wider than my former box. Works great for a grocery run and probably a camping trip as well. Kong made 43.2 mpg on the Rally Ride, bashing through the Coast Range for 108 miles. Pretty amazing, what with all the low gear high rpm stuff it did.

                  • Valves

Today I checked the valve clearances and since I had the fairing off I took out the speedo cable to lube it and found a real bind down by the wheel. It seems the cable is just a little short and gets bent when put on the center stand and the forks go all the way out. I think I will have another one made that's just a little longer and then I can put it in the loop of rubber on the fender just for it. Can't do that now because it REALLY is short if I do.

                      hi planedick,
jat, sometimes if the guage cluster sits on top of the top tripple tree
can cause that, have u got ur guages sitting at the bottom
of the top of the tripple tree.

I had to go look to see what you were talking about and sure enough, both the SGs have the brackets mounted on the bottom but when I reinstalled the SF guages I put it on top.

I still think I wanna do that swap. I mainly ride open hwy @ 60 to 80 mph. I think the swap would help keep the ol tach needle a little lower.

It makes the bike much smoother operating and more comfortable to control (shifting ect.) also. It really doesn't make a lot of difference in power to the wheel.
