    Beautiful write-up, Steve. The only thing I'd change is to add a note on the CCT adjustment to the end of it. I haven't done the shims on my bike yet, but it seems like that will be a critical step of the reassembly.

    And Phil....my 5-year-old saw that pic and laughed his butt off.
    My Special is as old as I am.

      Actually, I did one about 12 years ago. Haven't been active here for a long time but have been dropping in lately to have a peek around. Glad to see this forum is still going strong.

      The web page I did needs updating, but I'm not sure I remember the password. Everything is there, but it's a bit of a mess.

        I have used the tool, it works. And it is a good choice if your changing one or two shims. IMO, if your changing out more than that, then for time purposes, I would use one method or another of the cam methods.

        Not against the tool, just my experiences.

              Special

              WOW, not only is my bike "Special" but I must be "Special" too. Am I the only one who can use this tool right out of the box on all 8 valves with no mods or problems

                Almost the same...

                ...as our Elevens, but IMHO some good info and pics for those that have never done the job yet. Actually I did both my XS11 and XJ750 at the same time and swapped shims around on both engines as they are the same diameter

                    Well, it looks like at the end of the season I'll be replacing all of the shims AND the cam chain. So, I probably won't find out if I'm "special".

                      I was just reading your cam chain post Marty. Before you go ordering a new chain, check and make sure all the sliders are OK. As in not XSively worn or broken. JAT

                      Those roller chains aren't really prone to wear. I replaced a timing chain in a Mazda V6 just the other day and the chain was the same as what's in our engines, just longer. The chain was actually fine, the tensioner had gone south.

                        Tool

                        Not that special my tools worked out of box also. I think that it can be tuff to get the tool into position on some valves but if you take care its better than pulling the cams for most people. I agree that if you are in a situation where you have multiple valves to get set the cam pull works but in a one or two adjustment I would not use the cam pull method.
                        To fix the problem one should not make more assumptions than the minimum needed.

                          How do I check the sliders? If they are bad, the cam chain damper is NLA. has anyone here come up with a trick to repair it? Does the engine have to be disassembled to remove and replace it? Will my engine be making a lot of noise if the plastic material is gone?

                          I'm going to move this over to the cam chain wear post as well.

                            Just gor giggles

                            I went out to the man cave and got my Yamaha shim tool and my MP shim tool out. I tried both on a head I have lying about. Both will work but the MP is quite a bit harder to use. I got to comparing the two and thought you all may like to see what I found. Here is a pic of the two side by side in a vice. Sorry the pic is not clearer but I am not much of a photographer. This may explain why so many have to grind the MP tool. The Mp tool is the top and blackest one. I had never tried the MP one before today and it was a suprise that it sucked so badly.
