Tod, I didnt think you were being arguementive,
i think its been a interesting topic to discuss/debate. :-)

    Austin. Dont. :-)

if ur using an angle grinder with a wire wheel to remove the gasket, dont go pressing to heavily, if it grabs it could muck up the mating surface on the alloy, otherwise it should be fine.

with the stator i think you might b able to connect an ohm meter to the wires to tell if they havent corroded thru, i cant find my manual so not sure what readings would be.

Gasket Sraping....use a razor blade or gasket scraper, putty knife, then a wire wheel or brush....anything but a grinding wheel

Can't tell you on the debated issue of the carbon ring

I've never put a motor back together, without having a machine shop do the valves or jugs....so I've always gotten them back clean, and used new rings bearings etc.....

completly new to the concept of just putting an engine back together

3m makes little buffer pads about an inch big. Kinda look like a brillo pad but it goes on a die grinder. you know the little air tool. im not going to use a big huge grinder but i always use this little finisher wheel on all the cars i work on to clean the surface. Ya know what im talking bout?

Yup. I use them little 3M pads lots. Just dont go to wild with the coarseness on them pads. I have used them loads on aluminum parts and they work fine.

A few ways... Soft brass wire wheel, fine grit sandpaper with Mothers polish, an old timers trick, don't laugh, coca-cola and tin foil. Happy birthday bro.

doesnt feel different. Well i have to go out of town tomorrow but ill try those ways on thrusday. I think i want to paint the engine black and do a blacked out bike! Frame is stripped and will be painted on thursday so i might accidentally paint everything else

I gotta say, the best bike look is the one you like. They all can look good, and real pity is when someone does a BAD chop job to a rare or classic bike, but a good quality chop while not something I would personally do, is something I can certainly drool over.

Check with Andreas, he likely has some good jugs (the kind on the bike not the others ) for sale. It might be cheaper to do that than the big bore kit, then again, then you would have an XS12.
