I purchased from HF a plastic box of assorted stainless washers. There are enough of the same size of the shims you recomend and they all mic exactly the same. I've concidered this path but have decided to go orignal enginering design of extra plate or stronger springs. Weighing the cost and such, I still lean toward the plate. Your advice is appreciated.

Thanks, I did check it out however, in 1988 I had a poor experance with Barnett in that they sent an upgrade kit that had one spring about 1/8" shorter than the rest. Barnett asked me to send the kit back for replacement. I received a letter informing me that their replacement warrenty did not cover misuse and implied that I had over compressed that one spring and was inclosed was a refund check less shipping expenses. Barnett has lost a customer for life.

        • No extra steel plate!........don't be cheap, by the Barrnet springs, less than $20! Same goes for washers under the springs. They will wear a shear place in the top portion of bolt from shifting as they don't fit around bolt that tight......JMHO, and could save you an issue arising down the road........

            • Really

Motoman, you didn't pay attention to my post, but you still act as if you were the expert on the issue. The washers DO fit precisely and they don't go under the bolts anyway. They are the exact same size as the springs, both ID and OD and go UNDER the springs, not over them. They are a good way to eliminate the problem for little money. Been in mine for 5 yrs now with no problem at all. I also have little respect for Barnet aftermarket stuff.

                • While I had the clutch cover off, using a Q-tip I cleaned the inside of the glass and then the outside, getting down into the crevice around the outside and - - - the sight glass fell out!!! The rubber seal shows signs of dry rot and begain to crumble in my fingers. Good thing I guess, better now than during my next ride through Death Valley. Got a new one on the way from the Bandet. The other seals look and feel just fine and have not shown any sign of leaking. Iwill keep an eye on them for a while.

                  • Today I unpacked the bike, then went for a decent ride and to see the the dentist.

I rode to the Yamaha shop and gave them back the FAILED rain suit I bought before the trip. I did try it on at the shop before I bought it but it basically fell apart the first time I tried to use it at night in the rain.

After that I rode over to Cyclegear and picked up the new face shield that I bought a few days before I left for Colorado but that didn't actually arrive at the store until a few days after the rally was over. It is a very nice face shield.

                    • This morning I had to ride to the DMV: SNAFU. My '79 Special is now back on its planned non-op program again.

On the way back home I stopped off at the Yamaha dealership and ordered a new rain suit. I got a partial credit for the rain suit I returned to them when I got back from the Durango rally. I bought the suit from them before the rally and even though I tried it on over my riding gear right there at the counter before I left the shop it basically self-destructed the first time I had to use it in, you know, like, uh, the rain.

When I actually got home after warming up my credit card and all the assorted motorcycle oils during the morning ride I drained the middle and final drives, then removed Columbo's sacked drive train and put on the good one from Crash. The drilled and pinned u-joint I made for use with the '750 FD mod is still in great shape so I just removed the pinned spline extension and put it back on along with the new parts.

I refilled the middle and final drives with some really nice, extra-thick and juicy, highly viscous, savory synthetic Royal Purple 75W-140. I checked for leaks and then went on a 20 mile test ride. There are still no leaks.

Naturally, I have a couple of before and after pictures. :-

The face of evil means the final drive is toast. The bearing and gear debris in the Royal Purple final drive oil looks like an evil face staring back up, out of the drain pan. The oil only had only been in service for 4,000 miles.

My 1980 XS1100G, Columbo, with the 'new' drive shaft, middle and final drives from Crash are installed. After a 20 mile test ride there are no leaks.

The XS750 final drive died after 40,000 miles so I had to go back to a stock drive train until I find another XS750/XS850 final drive.

So it's been about two years now and the XS750/XS850 final drive mod ran very well but... it's not even close to the stock final drive --> XS(J?)ive grin reinstalled!

Tomorrow I'll dive into the 750 drive and see what kind of damage I've been able to inflict on it!

                      • Gotta keep these Bad @ss Bikes around

Today i checked the clearance between my valve shims and cams on both my 79 special cafe bike and my 80 standard... thank god and ebay for the valve shim replacement tool... makes checking all shims and the clearances on two bikes a 45 minute job. Ordered my new shims my 79 need every shim replaced. I dont think a valve job has ever been done. Pretty soon i'll be changing gears and hurten ears.

                        • It's been a good day and I got back about fifteen minutes to midnight.

Today I didn't do anything to my bike. I rode up to Ventura to meet Roo and then we went to his house to remove the Standard tank from his bobber and put the Special tank back on. Sometime this week I'll figure out how to get the tank back down to San Diego but I'll worry about that later.

Thanks for letting Roo borrow the tank, Garth!

                            • What I did to my bike today

                              Nothing!
Because last week after I installed the Barnet springs in the clutch and a test ride that have had positive results, I headed out on an extended ride to the VA. A few miles down the road I noticed oil pooling and swerling on the head fins. A quick stop inspection, I found the cam cover leaking. Made it back home and finished my trip in my truck. Bummer!
I had been planning to order another gasket for some time but I had misplaced my "TUIT" printed on a poker chip and didn't get around to it. Now I pay the price. I found 2 (two) gaskets on ebay for a reasonable price and paid for them strate away with paypal. After four days, I had not found a shipping notice so I set about contacting the seller about the delay. That is when I received notice the seller had refunded my money with an appology that the gaskets had been sold and relisted on ebay by mistake. BUMMER!
Made a reply the seller should offer me the next gasket for a large discount for my troubles.
No other gaskets available on ebay so on to the Bandit for a higher price for one than I was going to pay for two on ebay.
So Monster is down for now. The head and cover are cleaned up and did nothing to my bike today.
Of all the gaskets I have purchased of late, I have been maling timplates of them. Soon I will have a cam cover template as well.

Why go through all that trouble? You don't need a gasket for the valve cover. A nice thin bead of RTV works great (actually BETTER than a gasket) and cleans up much easier than a paper gasket the next time you need to get in there.
