  • Getting ready

Changed the oil, serviced the battery, topped off the middle and finsl drives, checked air pressures, checked brake pads, put the extra clutch and throttle cables and levers in the bags and installed the backrest on the seat. Gonna leave here about 8 AM Thursday and go straight to Flagstaff, do a little tourism, eat dinner and wait for the group to arrive much later.

      • Not today but last Saturday. I had a new rear tire fitted. I removed the rear wheel which involved removing one saddle bag and tipping up the fender to get it out. drove to the store about an hour away and returned to re install.
managed to get it all back together and changed the brake fluid in the rear MC while i had the bag off. I had to do it all my self as my Guru's had both run away to Manitoulin I discovered the luggage rack has a crack in the support so will have to find a friendly welder before XSNorth. Sunday gave her a good wash and brush up. Addie ready to roll again.

            • Well, it wasn't my bike....

I was in Nampa, ID for a family reunion. My Father-in-Law has a 1972 Honda trail 90 with 988 original miles. It hasn't ran in the 4 years he's had it. He told me that it will run as long as you spray starting fluid in it.
Hmmm, old bike that was designed to be simple. Had it running in 10 minutes. The carb was varnished. Disassemble and cleaned with carb cleaner (the stuff outside CA works great).
I recommended he change the gas, use Seafoam, and ride the heck out of it. He primarily wants to use it when he goes elk hunting. I had a blast on it zooming around his neighborhood. (I don't like the heel/toe shifter)

              • 15yrs of storage-back in the saddle this weekend

i successfully pulled my xs1100sh out of storage, and the black beast is back. got some expected issues. dirty carbs, sticky frt/rear brakes. bench cleaned all carbs, reinstalled all original parts ( except idle mixture screw bottom washer & o'ring that i purchased from MikesXS.com, cause i somehow lost them.) reinstalled carbs without nec adjustments, ( i didnt separate them) other than lowering the idle, even though i tried. she fires up on 1 crank, runs great idle and all throttle positions. during my thrill test drive, i noticed the rear brake caliper smokin. luckily had my tool kit with an 8mm wrench opened the bleeder and the fluid was boiling. that got me home to start the whole rear brake system teardown. i cleaned the master fluid hole, removed caliper and blew out the lines without any apparent reason found. i suspect the caliper piston sticking so im thinkin, how can i make sure its releasing? my question for all you guys is do u lube the ouside of the piston with brake fluid or is there something else like silicone lube or ? any advice is greatly appreciated! otherwise i bet i could shoot this bike full of holes and she still wouldnt die, what a reliable piece of engineering. Thanx in advance.

good to hear u got the beast running after so long,
with regards to the calliper, if u think its sticking id
remove it from the bike and pop the piston out and give it a
good clean up, as well as cleaning the inside of the calliper and

                  • Spooge hole

There's a very small hole in the bottom of the bowl that allows the fluid to return to the bowl when you release the brake. When it's plugged the brake will not release. You need to poke around in the bottom of the bowl with a peice of fine wire. I used a peice I broke off of a small wire brush.

                    • dropped nut

Fished one of the cam bearing cap nuts out of the crankcase. Felt pretty dumb when I dropped it. Was pulling the intake cam to get to the shims to adjust the valves. One slip, nut gone. Ended up pulling both cams and holding the chain out of the way. Once I figured that part out and had the suitable extendable magnet that would reach the bottom of the crankcase it actually went quite well. Think I was pretty lucky though.
Now on to tracking down suitable shims and getting it back together.

                      • Stuff I've been put'n off

If my parents ever see this, I get a spanking but at 120+ the clutch would slip at full throttle so this I had been planning to take the clutch down for a while. Now that I have a V-Max CCT with gasket, Hella TE16 Dual Horn Kit and clutch case gasket, it was time to get busy.
The Windjammer III and mount came off, cam cover off, spark sticks out, timming cover off. Turned the engine a few turns clockwise to "C". With Monster on the center stand, I removed the stock CCT. Suprise! The two screws were only finger tight. The only thing keeping the old CCT from leaking was gasket adhesave. I cleaned up the hole and torqued the screws and then installed and torqued the 19mm plug. I then carefully turned the engine and checked cam timing. All good.
Next everything I needed to remove, measure and gage the clutch innards. I felt like Indiana Jones as I flattend the 32 year old lock washer for it's first time. Everything is well within specs so I decided to deglaze the friction plates and add one steel plate but I just ordered from ebay. While I kill time for the steel to arrive, tomorrow exdept for the clutch, everything goes back with a fresh set of plugs and I'll wire in the new horns. I will update when the clutch is up.

Skip the extra steel plate, put in new barret springs, springs get weak and 30 year old springs are definitely going to be weak.

I get stainless shims 12 mm ID, 18 mm OD, 1 mm thick from Mcmaster.com and they are the same ID and OD of the srpings and are placed under the springs, two each spring and there is no more slipping. Cost is $7.43 for 25 shims.
