    • One of the rear frame stubs cracked again and needed to be welded.

I took off the luggage rack before heading over to the welding shop to make it easier to get at the frame and the rear fender almost fell off on my head. Both of the frame stubs are cracked but this time the luggage rack is holding them in place and they haven't gotten around to falling off yet.

I put the rack back on and rode over to the shop and the owner is working somewhere out in Bakersfield today. He took the welding equipment with him so none of the other guys at the shop could do the work today. Tomorrow's not looking real good either.

There's nothing I can do about it so I think I'll take off the crummy old engine mounts and put on the better ones from XJ, then take a break and pick some lint off the dog while I watch the evening fog roll in.

                • Fork oil

I changed the fork oil in my 80XS1100SG.
Put it on the center stand, jacked up the front, & followed directions. Pushing against the spring and trying to start the threads of one cap just about beat me. Removed spring and started it to be sure it was straight and could go in without crossthreading. After practicing, replaced spring and cap, filled air shocks to 15psi using small hand pump purchased fron Harley dealer.

Finished job. It seems like there might be an easier way. pump oil in???

Yeah, take the forks out. Turn them upside down and use a basting syringe to put the fork oil in with the forks upside down. Then put the screw back in, put the forks back and and reassemble. Works pretty fast, no mess, easy to measure exactly the amount you need, no fighting with the springs either.

Thanks. That fight with the springs was tough. Good to hear of another way that sure sounds doable.

                        • I got mine all wet, as in 2 hrs in the rain. Found out my gear leaks. Also thoroughly tested the waterproofing job I did on the neutral switch wire. It works well. He probably needs a wash job now. That's automatic here, just park it outside for a while, pull it in, wipe it down. Summer is over in the PNWet.

Yeah, that sorta works, but it can be hard to get the right amount in that way cause it spits back out, but if you take them out of the trees and do them upside down, it doesn't spit and you get it right the first time, works fast, clean and easy, and no fighting with the springs. Still gotta fight the springs if you need to replace the seals though.

Thank you very much Dave. It is one of my favorite photos. When I first saw it, I considered cropping out the road sign arrow, but it is candid, really caught me going my own way Thanks for taking the picture, & showing me some of the beauty in your area.

to do on 80SG I removed the chrome covers from the swing arm pivots, thinking to grease them. Found no grease zerk fitting there. Left side had grease on nut & side cover. Greased drive shaft 25cc or 25 pumps of the grease gun handle. Is it possible grease gets pushed all the way to the swing arm pivot from the drive shaft zerk? I have pumped a lot of grease in there over the years.
