  • Knuck,

Only part numbers 12, 15, 4, 16, 4, 17 were included in my 1980 engine. Part number 16, Kick Gear No. 3, acts as a stabilizer/idler gear for the 1st Gear Wheel (not shown).

Part numbers 5, 10, 11, 13 and 14 were not included as there was no reason they should be included -- no OEM kicker.

I don't remember if the cases have to be split to add or remove them, especially parts 13 and 14. Like Randy, I had already taken the engine apart to fix the starter clutch and some other problems so I added the missing kicker parts before I buttoned it back up.

I do know you can not add or remove part 16 or 17 without splitting the cases. Kick Gear No. 3 rides on and retains Shaft No. 2 and meshes with the 1st Gear Wheel (not shown) which is inboard of and adjacent to the Middle Drive Gear (also not shown).

Shaft No. 2 would have to bend to allow Kick Gear No. 3 to go around the Middle Drive Gear.

    Regards,

    Scott

    • like i said i dont know about all of them but mine (1980 special) had the internal pieces to make it work i just added the shaft that the kicker goes on .... as for the starter ring goes the kicker does not use that (i think) it does something internally with the tranny cause if you roll the bike backwerds and push the kicker down it locks up the tranny and stops the wheel

Rode it to work, rode it to lunch, rode it home. Only thing better would be if I could ride it all day long.

        • Today I put new nylon screws in the fairing windshield. They're white nylon but they work.

After that I found that 'tuit I was looking for last year and zip tied the spare set of clutch and throttle cables to the frame under the tank and the seat so they'll be
with me on the road instead of hanging on garage wall when one of them breaks.

Then I went for a ride.

The white nylon still looks goofy. I'll take them off and boil them in black Rit dye tonight then put them back on tomorrow.

Cool, you may have lucked out and someone added the ratchet wheel and clip to a late-model engine. It's also possible that you have an engine from an earlier year on your 1980 Special. See if the serial numbers on the frame head and the engine match.

There is no starter ring. If you're saying that you're locking up the engine with the kicker by rolling the bike backwards with the kicker engaged then don't do that. You'll wind up doing some repair work or telling the next owner about starter rings when you try to unload a borked bike.

Yep, it's not as UV resistant as dye and I don't feel like hand marking all the nuts, screws and washers on a Friday night. I just have to drop them in the pot and leave them alone. I can deal with that.

                    • Replaced the fork seals, the PO had them in upside down with metal wire clips that were almost nonexistant after rusting away.

Also put the R&L front calipers back on the proper sides, since the PO had them on the wrong sides, upside down.

                      Washed, waxed, chrome polished.

                      • Crazcnuk, amazing what you find fubared inheriting someones elses mess! Glad to hear you got it all sorted out. Used to see that so often when someone would bring an automotive carb. to me and want it rebuilt and set up. Visually could always tell if someone else already had their blind fingers in it.......never ceased to amaze me!

                        • Moved my highway pegs down so I can actually put my feet on them without discomfort. Then I checked the air in the tires and adjusted it (added a little of course) and checked the oil level (it was fine) and then i went out and rode it, at least until my tailbone was reaching the end of it's tolerance, so I did the stupid thing and found the roughest non-goat road I could for the ride back, and really showed my tailbone who is boss! Now I need to wash all the dead bugs off the front, but all the ones on the windshield and fairing are ones that DID'NT hit me. I was going to wash it first, but then figured it would just get dirty, so I figured I'd just get it dirty without washing it first.
