  • I rode my E. Haven't done that in a few months. Next will be the LG. It starts and runs fine.... buried in the shed.

What about a damper tip? I have a couple of tensioners here to put on my bikes... I didn't pick up that I need to change a tip...

You don't "need" to. Some felt more comfortable having a nylon tip between the tensioner and the chain rail

          • Finally got the mid and rear drive fluid changed and tackled the cam chain tensioner! Brake fluid change front and rear next.

In the thread about switching out to this type of cam chain tensioner there was some questions about the stock unit having a rubberized tip that might absorb noise and or vibration. Ivan made a tip and sent to to me to test. It fit on the end of the new tensioner like a glove.
The only issue I can think of about this sort of change is that if your cam chain is unevenly stretched the self adjusting tensioner would likely take all the slack out of the chain at the loosest point and therefore potentially be too tight at places where the chain is not stretched as much. This could in theory stretch the chain in the previously un-stretched parts or put added stress on the cam sprockets and perhaps the cam bearings.

              • Moved the fairing, luggage, trunk and rear running boards to the 78. Changed the handlebars to the 80 style, replaced the front master cylinder and front brake hose (the old one was too short).

Put on newer handlebar grips. wired the xm radio adaptor, antenna etc.

Unfortunately, it has gone back to shorting out and blowing the ignition fuse when I turn the key on.

All that is left is to put on the case guards, change the sidecover lock (don't have a key for the one on it), put on the fender guard and front disc covers, and change the front brake pads.

                Oh, and sold the 80SG.

                    • I tuned up my 79 restored bike including changing out the charging system but that didn't fit my tack bounce. It turned out to be the tack itself that was not working. So installed a NOS tack and also found a miss fire caused by loose connections between coil leads and plug caps. Just took her for a run and she runs GOOD. Also re-jeted the carbs on the modified bikes engine and got her running GOOD. She should be ready for a safety real soon.

                      • Yesterday marked the official Time Of Death for Thunderstruck. Finished splitting the cases and removing all the inerds. Frame and engine cases with the head went to the scrap yard.

Have a few items listed on the bay, intake boots, triple trees, clutch basket. other items to follow that are not requested here at XS11.

Sad day for me, will mark the TOD in her title before I cremate it.

                          • Got the 79F ready to head out on it's summer trip. I have a Yamaha trunk that used to be mounted to a rack, but I rigged it up so it easily straps to the passenger seat. Having a backrest is nice, makes you feel like you and the bike are one.

Looks good Phil. It kind of ties the storage solution all together too, what with the saddle bags right below it and on each side. Does it interfere when opening the saddlebags?

                              • Robert, it interferes slightly, but they can still be opened easily. Looks like I have the back tied down a bit too tight in that last pic, it isn't that straight. Glad your bike is handling good with those new springs.
