  • Nice Trunk Phil. Still looking for one on the Venturer.

Pulled the carbs on the 80G for a cleaning, have to find better filters. Fine particles got in the float bowls and stopped up the pilots.
    Runs great now .

Finished changing out the amber taillights to red along with the dual element bulbs. Now to find a taillight modulator.

    • Oil change and filter today for both Tsunami and Purple Reign and checked middle and final drives. Also cleaned and lubed caliper sleeves bolts and brake pad sliding surfaces on Tsunami - that should eliminate periodic problem with discs warming up.

Heading south this weekend with another couple for a couple of nights in Coeur d'Alene. Any XSives over that way for a face-to-face on Sunday?

      • Just picked up a 79 motor for a 79 rolling chassis I picked up last fall. It'll give me something to do besides just riding around on my 78 all day.

        • Fixed the rest of the wiring, bike starts fine now.

Changed the + battery cable, and a few of the rotted out connectors.

          Put the fairing on.
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

          • Changed oil and filter, reinstalled oil cooler (had to remove fairing lower to do this ), swapped cam chain adjuster to auto-adjust type (had to remove exhaust to do this ).

No leaks, no broken bolts or studs, no blood or burns. Moderate amount of swearing.

            • Actually painted the old gal last nite and put her back together this morning. Got rid of the olive green color. I'm kinda like'n the new look. Once I buff it out and put a coat of wax on it. It'll shine!

                • Well

I tried to fix the original Vetter luggage rack that my trunk mounted on, and when I went to home depot to get some grade 8 bolts for it, I left it there in the shopping cart, and of course it's gone now.

So, I stole the luggage rack off the 400 (it actually fit pretty well) and mounted the trunk on it, and one of the mounting parts broke

Then my turn signal fell off! It was hanging by the wire (left rear signal) and somehow the lens and screws are gone. Mounted it back on, and I'm hoping I don't get a fixit ticket before I get a new lens and screws for it.

Now I gotta figure out how to fix the broken rubber mount for the trunk, and then I'll be good while I find an OEM luggage rack so I can put this one back on the 400.

                  • If you mean the rubber 'bunkees' that go under the trunk, you can buy them from Craig Vetter's site, or you can go down to your local hardware store and look for electric motor mounts.

They work quite well. The mounts are rubber, just like the original bunkees.

But which of the chain hardware stores would carry those. I haven't seen the like at home depot, and unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a much in the way of anything different left in Kalifornia. This means I have to buy a full set of 4 when I need one, and am on a pretty strict budget right now.

I'll have to go look again today after work, but I don't have much in the way of confidence in finding something.

                      • Well, up here a buddy found them at Canadian Tire, for me. He was shopping for something else and saw them.

I assume they are for the type of motor that is in a household furnace.

                          • Changed the oil last night. Finally trying the 20W50 quaker state vs. the 15W40 rotella. Also found out you gotta torque the filter bolt to the correct amt. Never did before just tight. Well gotta leak all around the 'O" ring 'dog bowl" what a mess. Took it apart 'again' checked 'O' ring is okay then torque to correct amt & no leaks. Guess you gotta do it right. Hopefully no more oil burn with the 20W50. - Dan

Mine used oil on the rotella, but on the castrol 20/50 it doesn't. I'm thinking about trying their synthetic that says it's designed for wet clutches. I thinking that anything that is likely to cause less wear, and not FUBAR the clutch, will turn out to be a good thing. Can 't say I've had any trouble with the "O" ring leaking, and I don't torque it, just get it reasonably tight, but maybe my calibrated arm gets it where it's supposed to be?

No, it needs something that can be fastened/bolted to on both the top and bottom. Their like a motor mount, so the trunk is completely isolated, with a totally rubber connection to the bike. Works real nice for reducing vibration for items in the trunk.
