Police rousts, yeah, too many times and too much aggravation and lost sleep trying to avoid 'em. Scorch marks ONE TIME on my KZ from trying to sleep it off in a bar parking lot. Never again and CNN can bite me.

Yeah, I'm going to make SLC the first night, because my baby sis lives just outside there in Roy. The way home will be Sparks, because she and her other half will be there working on a condo they own....

Howard, I know this was not what you meant, but I offer the following: There are free camping sites in National forests, but you can't pitch a tent just anywhere along the road. As far as pitching a tent anywhere else along any highway, good luck with that! You will most likely be told to leave. Been there-done that!

If anyone plans on coming through Colorado Springs to get to camp, I offer a place to stay Thursday night. I am west of the Springs, about an hour away up US24 + about 12 miles. Kremmling would be as follows on the map:

From my house it is about 2 hours and 40 minutes to Kremmling.

I was half serious in that going through small towns, on back roads off the main drag you could find an out-of-the-way park or campsite that would allow a tent for a night.

Even with that said, our campsite is running 12 bucks a night per guy. I'm sure there are a few along the way that would be similar in cost and that's a lot more money for souvenirs. Or fill up with premium gas on the difference and treat your bike (LOL), you know lot's of guys do!

I took the Highway Patrol's advice one night when I was falling asleep driving in heavy fog and pulled off the freeway in Santa Maria, CA. I couldn't see anything so I just followed the curb until I spotted a huge bank of ice plant and five of us stumbled out of the old Corvair and we crashed out for the night.

Later in the morning, we were rousted by the Sherriff and discovered we'd been sleeping in someone's front yard in one of the the most excusive parts of the city and there were several anxious pairs of eyes peeking at us from behind the curtains on the second storey of the house. We piled back in the car and were followed to an IHop where we had breakfast.

It was after 3:00 AM, we were all exhausted or already asleep, the car was almost completely out of gas and the fog was so thick I couldn't see the upper half of the lighted freeway exit sign or more than four feet away when I got to the street. Finding that ice plant was like finding a giant mattress from Heaven and fortunately for us, the sheriff knew how foggy it'd been so once he figured out what was going on he settled for the wake-up call and escorting us to the edge of town. Ah! Road trips!

Yes, pretty much that but without the sleeping bag.

I had to get off the freeway, not just because I was tired. I was down to about 35 MPH to follow the edge of the freway, too slow and truckers in the '70s were just as crazy driving in the fog as they are now but the 50-ton trucks were made out real metal, nothing remotely lightweight or aerodynamic about them at all unless you'd count a '64 Corvair wedged in the grille of cabover as aerodynamic.

I once awoke floating in a field because I didn’t understand local tides.
It was an unpleasant lesson, but one that I won’t soon forget.
Mistakes are an inevitable part of learning something new and also valuable lessons that make us better campers.
Oh, man! I hate learning experiences!
