Fun morning and afternoon
I just got back from picking up some parts in Sandy Eggo and I have Garth's spare Standard gas tank, too. Whenever Roo is ready we can put it on his Special and fit some compatible handlebars for it.
We won't have to stop for gas every 90 miles or carry extra fuel for the dry stretches between gas stations.-- Scott

There are locals in Colorado that DO know how to repair the gears, and are probably willing to help. It's just that it must be the proper place, and a public campground is NOT the proper place.
I'm sure someone local WILL be willing and able to help for the price of a meal and beer, but that would be up to them. We all help WHEN we can, but we cannot always help when we want to.Ray Matteis

Slow down there bud - I didn't see anyone jump on you as a personal thing...
I just thought that they were like me - looking forward to relaxing and riding - not really wrenching unless important parts start falling off
Thats why I suggested planning a separate wrenching weekend. Maybe you could even host and benefit from having everything right there in your garage.
Dont worry we'll get your scoot back on the road.

yes sir!
I found my auto CCT from a Venturer that I had lost (it was in my toolbox).
I did the mod yesterday as well as an oil change - it wasn't due but I drained the fill plug and refilled it clean - kinda a 3/4 change just to be fresh. I don't think I could be MORE ready.
Life keeps throwing challenges to make me change plans but I refuse to deviate from being in SW Colorado on 1 July.

Hey John, you need a second rider for most of the way home?? I've got to be at TAMU (oops!!) on the morning of the sixth for work. I figured I'll just ride there, and ride back home the following week when I'm done.Ray Matteis

Alrighty then... Me and CaptonZap are ready to go. Spent this morning servicing the steering head bearing on my 80SG, had a consistent lower speed weave with the bike since I bought it 3 years ago, and by golly pulling the headset, cleaning the bearings, re-greasing and re-torquing was the ticket. Everything was in more or less good shape, so no major issues during the process. No more low speed weave, dead nuts steady.
For what it's worth on arrival times, me and Zap plan to arrive in Durango at the campground mid afternoon on the 1st. We're riding in from the front range, taking Hwy 115 out of Colo Spgs to Hwy 50 west, through Canon City along the Arkansas river to Salida/Poncha Springs, then south via the "gunbarrel" toward Alamosa, then angling over to Del Norte, South Fork, on over Wolf Creek to Pagosa Springs, and onward to Durango. About 330 miles or so, will be a great ride. Looking forward to meeting you all and putting names and faces to the great folks from the forum.Howard

Just a quick outline of the Rally scedule:
Note: All meals are "on your own". Many good restaraunts in town!
Friday night, July 1: Dinner at Bar D Chuckwagon, $21.00 a head for dinner and stage show, table for 14 reserved so we can sit together, leave United Campground at 5:00 PM to get there when the gates open.
Saturday, July 2: Gather at United Campground at around 8:00 AM, kickstands up at 9:00 AM. We'll start by heading west to Dolores Canyon, north to Ridgeway, south over Red Mounain Pass and through Silverton, then back into Durango. Planned stops for fuel and photos. Lunch stop in Telluride.
Sunday, July 3: Choice of 2 rides, short ride to Vallacito lake, about 1 - 2 hours with stops. Longer trip to Wolf Creek Pass, return over same route as a loop would be really long trip. Gather at United Campground around 8:00 AM, kickstands up at 9:00 AM.
Monday, July 4: There are no organized plans. Jerry and Motoman will be heading home. Durango does have a good 4th of July fireworks show if you plan to stay in the area. Other local attractions include the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railway and Mesa Verde National Park.
As Motoman indicated, I will be arriving on Thursday, June 30. If there are any other "early arrivals", I will be at the United Campground by mid-morning. I hope to pre-run the Saturday route, which you are welcome to do with me if you feel so inclined. I plan to pick up a few supplies, confirm our reservation with the Bar D people, and generally just get set up and organized.
For anyone who needs to contact me while I am on the road, my cell phone is 970.309.2226. Feel free to give this numbers to your SWMBO or significant other in case they need / want an additional contact within the group. Due to the mountain terrain, cell phone coverage will be limited during the rides. Please let your people know not to panic if they can't contact you right away. "Yes, Virginia, there are places in the West where cell phones don't work..."
The route we take on Saturday will not be fast, partially due to the nature of the roads and partially because of the holiday weekend traffic. In addition, there are planned stops for photos, fuel, and lunch. This is more of a sight-seeing tour than a blast, so bring your cameras.
I am looking forward to seeing everyone there!Jerry Fields

A reminder for those especially traveling up on two wheels: With the hot weather and no change expected soon, beware of the gators sunning out on the slab/superslab. Seen more than usual. Especially beware of the ones that get dizzy and lose there grip on the rolling 18wheelers. Following closely, waiting to pass or otherwise MAY result in an attack from one that COULD result in serious injury or worse. These 11's and any other scoot in the 100hp range have plenty of grunt to hang back a couple hundred feet and still able to slingshot past when the oppertunity arises on the two-lane roads! Wanna see everyone arrive and get home safely without an attack from one of these ill-tempered critters. Also, note that there is an abundant amout of forest rats in the mountain reagions(SoldierSummit if coming south from SaltLake region..... Cortez to Durango coming from the west/soutwest and east coming west all along the Colo.Hwy160 area.......any time of DAY or NIGHT! They seem to delight in playing a suicidal game with anything that rolls, specially if it rolls on two wheels! Be aware and travel safely!81H Venturer1100 "The Bentley" (on steroids) 97 Yamaha YZ250(age reducer) 92 Honda ST1100 "Twisty"(touring rocket) Age is relative to the number of seconds counted 'airing' out an 85ft. table-top.

What Motoman is trying to say is watch the heck out for re-treads flying off of trucks and/or laying in the road, especially on the interstate. AND keep your eyes peeled for deer and elk (especially deer) that seem to have an affinity to coming across the road in front of you, not just at night time so beware all the time.
With that said, I picked off a deer a few years back on Hwy 160 between Pagosa and Durango at high noon when in my Jeep Grand Cherokee. Or should I say, the deer picked me off as I did my super-best to get out of the way, but it was dead-set on meeting me and ran square into the side of the Jeep no matter how wide I tried to steer around it as it came be-bopping up out of the road side ditch.
Live long and prosper, see you all in Durango!Howard
