  • "'Gators and lugnuts and deer, Oh my!"

I just finished putting a new rear ME88 on Columbo and it's time to go for a ride to break it in.

I'm on my way up to Roo's place with Garth's spare Standard gas tank and the handlebars from "Old Faithful". We'll find out in a little while if this is going to work for his bike and the ride to Colorado!

    • I hope it works out for the tank switch. Now why do handlebars as well? Problems with the Special bars hitting the Standard tank, I would guess?

What's the longest dry stretch you will have between fuel stations? Maybe you've posted that already, but can't remember.

      • Well i'm almost ready, we're supposed to leave here (carson city, NV) on wednesday after noon and all I've got left to do is rebuild the petcocks so they stop leaking - synch and balance my carbs, put some hi way pegs on, and change the oil.

I've got a spare set of handle bars I'd offer, but you'd have to stop here or we'd have to meet up along the way so you can get them. They're black, very close to the stock standard handle bars but about 1/2 the rise. The fit with a standard tank, just to short for SWMBO to reach...

        • extra bars

I have a few extra bars I am bringing for free to any at the rally who need them. Got a set of drag bars, special rototillers, and some gold wing bars. Also have one of the backrest bars (no rack or pad) for the picking.

I am ready - gonna rotate the tires on the Chevy tonight.

          • Tank and handlebar swap accomplished!

I just got back about a half hour ago. The tank works and nothing leaks; thanks for the offers of help with the handlebars!

I had GSM black low-rise handlebars on the parts bike and Roo has them mostly dialed in where he wants them. After we finished the work we went for a little shakedown cruise to get fuel a few miles down the road in Buelton, had dinner, then rode for a while before splitting and heading home.

Bobber's (Roo) bobber has Special forks in, I think, Standard trees with low flat bars and bar-end spot mirrors. The bars would have obliterated the tank so I had to put on something a little higher.

We got busy changing adjusting parts and I forgot to check the frame serial number to see if it was originally a Standard or a Special before it was bobbed but I think it's a Standard. Anyway, it's all squared away and ready to roll!

I'll be leaving Simi Valley on Wednesday evening and kicking it at Roo's so I don't have to get up quite so early in the morning to ride up to Paso Robles on Thursday morning to meet DiverRay.

            • new pic

Scott - I like the new pic - Columbo was one of my favorite shows growing up.

Ride safe and see everyone friday. Am leaving tomorrow evening myself driving at night cuz of the heat (and because I am excited to get started), and stopping in Albuquerque. Anyone close give me a ring at (210) 478-one 832 (or even if you need assist - I have an open spot on the trailer)

Thanks, John, it was one of my favorites, too. I got a shave and a haircut this weekend so the old picture had to go.

No, I did NOT get a tan trench coat to go with the haircut!

                • I'd be a little afraid...

to see one of you guys walking around in a trench coat - might be fun to wear one with shorts underneath though to mess with people....

                  • Wheeeeeeww!........now that's "crunch time" for a few.......sounds like someone kept Murphy locked up in a bottle . Myself, just gotta clean and get all the Cantafordya and newer Colo. bugs off, a bit of Meguiar's Pro fine-cut cleaner then polish on the "tupperware",a touch of BluMagic buff on the fork tubes and a bit of chrome polish for the shiney stuff........beats wrenching at this point.......ride that bohemath up in the trailer so it can push the remainder of the train up over the "hills" south.
