  • XS11 Rolling Rally

Hi Denny, I just booked the Coho Ferry for Aug 15th. I should be into your place late in the afternoon.
For anyone else that is running this rally I suggest that you confirm soon so that Denny has some idea of how many are showing up to depart from his place. We may also need an accurate count in case we have to book space on the Port Townsend Ferry.
    See you on the road!
    Just a month to go.

    • Port Townsend Ferry

You can't book the Port Townsend Ferry as a group, it has to be done individually by each person, at least 24hrs. in advance and I think you have to be there an hour and 1/2 early. If you miss your time you have to go space available and they won't allow the bikes to board first you have to board with the cars. My advice is to go by way of the Kingston/Edmonds Ferry. and save the hassle. There is a number you can call for full instructions, but most the guys around here are boycotting the ferry until they get the new ones built. If you do come this way make sure you bring plenty to drink while you wait, because there is nowhere to get anything without leaving the line, and no shade. The people who ride the ferry to work have to book everyday in advance no exceptions.

      • Thank you for the update on the ferry situation there wa407mpp. I guess we should start looking for an alternative route. Maybe head straight east from Olympia then north. We must find away around Seattle without using any more of I-5 than necessary. I hate that POS highway.

        • I was wondering if the destination at thompson Falls is set pretty much in stone for the third night .BTW the rally site says Thompson Falls Idaho, but I only know of Thompson Falls Montana.
Is there another one?Or is it that one.It looks like the third day is there. How will people know if things are on track.I live in Spokane,Wa. and would like to join in at Oysoyos and ride to probably the Thompson Falls stop or whereever you guys decide
to camp.Probably stay there somewhere for the night and head back home the next day sometime.Sounds like a great time .I'd like to put faces on some screennames.

          • Tarzan, great to hear you plan on joining us.

Yep, we mean the Thompson Fall Montana. If you know of any good places to stay around the Thompson Falls area, feel free to advise.

            • Alternative Route for Day 1

Due the ferry situation, how about this as an alternative route for the first day?

The last time I took this route, the Mt Loop Hwy was closed due to storm damage. Anybody know if it is open? There is a by-pass (SR9) we can take if it is closed.

              What do you think?

              • Denny,

From the looks and route on the map you put up, looks like the route would be Hwy 510 to Hwy 702 to Orting Kapowsin Hwy north to 162, then east a bit to 410 North, then 169 North to 18 north, to catch 202 north etc.

Most that route is nice two lane highway/roads and beautiful!
I went to the WA State Transpoprtation page to look this up.

                  • Dave, as a Cdn citizen I really only need my drivers licence going either way. I use my passport though. Saves any question. As a US citizen you can get into Canada with your DL if it has a picture on it. BUT!!! For a US citizen, for you to get back into the US I understand you now have to show your passport. Sorry, not a Canadian rule. Thank your own, "Homeland Security".

                    • DZ, the alternate day 1 route looks very good to me. All we see of I-5 and I-90 is an overpass!!! Thumbs up!!!

                      • The alternative route is 50miles longer (412 total) and slower road. We will have to stay on our wheels, with an early start (before 8:00am) and minimal stop delays.
If we plan lunch (1 hour stop) in Carnation, Wa. We should make Osoyoos by 6:30pm.

I am planning on spending the night at the campground just before the Canadian boarder (outside Osoyoos).

Where is a good meeting place in Osoyoos (Canadian riders!) to meet up at?

                        • Alternative route DAY 2

I have also heard mention of a rider or two that may stay in the US and meet up with the rest of the group at Thomson Falls (or somewhere abouts).

wa407mpp were you thinking of heading this way?

The new chosen route may be a bit higher mileage but if you balance that off against the time we would have used up waiting for the ferry, the slow pace of the ferry and the slow pace across Whidbey Is (low speed limits and heavily patrolled) our total on road time will be very similar.
We all have to remember that this is a M/C road trip. Sh-- happens. Meeting pre planned destinations each day may not be achievable. It would be nice BUT!
Lets just strike out on the trip and overcome our difficulties as we go.

                            • Meeting is going to be a challenge, but I like Ken's point of view. It is an adventure.

I will have my cell phone and post the number before we leave. I suggest riders interested in linking with us along the way, should text message me. I will check it regularly. Voice message are also a way to go, but I have found that I can send and received TMs with less reception that I can with voice.

I am also going to see if I can post to this forum from my cell phone and maybe leave some digital bread crumbs.

                              • Denny,

I like the new route, but just to wintrope will be a good ride. I've done it a couple of times. Traffic could be a issue through the park but it will be a beautiful ride.

Since you will be heading up 18 which is only a mile or so from my house I'm thinking I will meet up with you all on it Sat am. I will have my cell so you can just give me a call right before you leave your place. I'l be waiting on one of the exit ramps.

I have to be home wed eve so I will probably have to split off when we are in MT and head back West.

My Iphone has web access so we may be able to post from it. I will play with it the next couple of days.

finally fired up the beast after its 30 year tune and its running fantastic. I cant wait for this ride. Maryellen and I are heading up to Vancouver Island next week, Quadra Island, for a shake down run.
