Sounds to me like the owner is going to have to invest a few dollars for you to get those sorted out.

Been following this, and would like to add a couple pennies. After you get carbs, jets, fuel flow, air filters, the bike running and synched, the most accurate fuel height adjustment is made with bike running, on center stand level both ways. IMHO the float measurement gets you real close and good enough to get it running, but if you're as OCD as me, running fuel levels are another fine tune method along with color-tune.

You called it. Straightened out 3 of 4 tabs. Last one broke.

I was just going to ask if the cheap repro sets were any good because even the ones with the tabs I bent back aren't 100%. Off just a hair on position and it doesn't hit the post correctly.

I found a $15 set in the US.

Thanks. But the owner understands right now I'm doing a patch job to see if the engine's good before investing any further.

As an alternative... anyone can buy these in the auto parts store whilst grabbing some clear fuel line and mOaR carb cleaner spray-

Just gotta go in from the open side, pry out the spring with a jewelers screwdriver or pointy tweezers and the check ball falls out. (^_^)

Save the ball cause it's the right size for the detent balls in the choke rod in case you lose'em. (ᗒᗣᗕ)

I swap the aluminum washers from the drain plugs onto the zirks for a good non-leaky seal. (・‿・)

I would NOT recommend using Teflon tape as a means of leak proofing these for the testing. (O_O)

I've had to go back in later with a dental pick to clean out the Teflon tape in the carb bowl threads so the tape pieces don't end up being sucked up into the jets. (_Oo)

If you still have the carbs off the bike take a few to really clean the screw up and it will be easier to adjust. I just use a long screwdriver to adjust it from the side. It can get quite heated in there. Of course without the original airbox it might be a bit easier to get to.

OK. I installed the Chinese floats and set height at 23mm. Carbs on bike with a fuel IV and bike level. Fuel level is right at the housing lip which surrounds the bowl on all 4. Making the level about 8.5mm high form the desired 3mm below the bowl screw surface. I never had this problem before. Level usually at least close with height set correctly. Anyone have a formula for how much to increase float height to decrease fuel level 8.5mm. Raising the float that much seems excessive. And I'm only doing it once...

It's probable the needle and seat causing the problem. I went through this with chinese parts on a set of carbs and ended up replacing needles and seats with correct part to solve the problem.
If you want to work with what you have, do this. Turn bank of carbs upside down and measure the floats at the BACK SIDE, furthest from the seats. Adjust the back side by about 8mm higher from the carb body, and try again. This should get you to a good running point so you can at least test the bike out before putting anymore money into it.

I'm going with what I have. As a matter of fact, these floats were almost dead on in height out of the box on top of K&L float valves. I'm just wondering if anyone knows of a real accurate float height to fuel level ratio. I have a feeling if I go with a 1:1 ratio and adjust the height 8mm it's going to lower the fuel level significantly more than that. From what I've read it can be anywhere from 1:1 to .5.:1. With .5:1 going with an 8mm increase in height is going to give me about 4mm to low a level when all said and done. I swear I'm only doing it once...

You might want to adjust one carb til you get the level correct then the others to match, that way you can eyeball the correct float tang with the others.

I have them off and increasing 8mm isn't even possible. Not enough travel. I'm going to go with the old spec at 25.7mm and see what happens.
