That fork looks like it may have been heated up. Maybe it's from holding onto the shift lever, trying to keep it in gear. I'd find another one.

I have a trick I use
that is a bit more time consuming but never suffers capillary action/bleed through.
Get some white Elmer's glue, a fine point brush and carefully 'paint' the Elmer's where you don't want paint. It takes a few hours to dry but the results are perfect if you take your time.
Peel off the dry glue just like you would tape.79 SF & 80 LG MNS

Graveyard - '81 XS850 Special
All of my bikes are projects, maybe one day I'll have them running.

Ok performed the dremal fix to 2nd and 5th went as planned both were really bad just didn't feel good about being this deep into the bike and not having better gears so spent the weekend looking for parts bike. Luck was on my side a friend of a friend had a complete 78 xs1100, 2 additional frames, a 79 complete engine, and boxes of parts to complete another bike. He had no knowledge of the bikes he was planning on a drag bike, divorce forcing him to move so for $200 all of it ended up in my truck and trailer last night. Can't wait to open up the 79 to see how tranny looks......Last edited by Fearthepack; 03-02-2015, 08:06 AM.1979 F worst one i could find

Dilemma...... would you use a known running engine that has 35,000 miles with badly worn transmission and suspect abuse. Or an unknown engine with pristine
trans almost no where on any dogs and the inside of the engine is a pretty golden oil color no signs of excessive heat or abuse don't know mileage???? Gut says use unknown motor.. but head says go with what you know works anyone want to express their opinion???1979 F worst one i could find

Considering that these engines are just about bullet-proof short-of neglect, I'd skip the tranny fix and use the unknown engine.1979 XS1100F

Here is the new tread on running motor VS non running motor feed back. http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=43603
Decided to go with unknown motor. Did the washer swap to #2 gear buttoned up lower end and onto cylinder head. Going to replace valve seals and clean up the valves and re-lap them.Last edited by Fearthepack; 03-10-2015, 06:52 AM.1979 F worst one i could find

Engine paint...... The PO had painted it silver....
My goal for paint is.... I want the engine to look bigger then Life!!!!
With this in mind it would look best against the green in all black with polished highlights BUT a black engine just disappears/ blends into its surroundings. I want this Big Ass engine to stick out like it deserves. All engine very little bike...And nothing that resembles factory1979 F worst one i could find

Yes sir, thank Goodness my only real commitments is work and a girlfriend, so the bike is easily squeezed in a couple times a week right now till it's road-worthy.1979 XS1100F
