OK, I just had one of the moments. ( that scares me sometimes).

You did work on the trans right? When you put the shift forks back in did you put them back in the correct order? They are marked 1 2 &3.

I think I put them in the correct order. Would the trans shift in and out of gear if I had misplaced the shift forks? I don't seem to have any problems shifting by hand in and out of gear.

It would shift but it might hang in some gears and not go completely into others.

I went out to look at the order, left to right or right to left, but I don't have a parts engine I can easily get that info with. I THINK #1 is the closest to the clutch but I'm not sure. I never made a note of it. I bet someone here knows off the top of their head though.

Like I said, you can drop the pan and oil pump and see what's going on.

Can I drop the pan without taking the engine out? It is currently on a bike lift. If I remove the clutch and the counter shaft would I be able to rotate the trans by hand. I remember spinning the transmission by hand before I buttoned everything up. It rotated by hand very smoothly. I am stumped because everything spun by hand. Now that I have everything put back together it gets jammed up. Very frustrating. I just don't want to disassemble everything if I don't need to. However, if the trans needs work I guess I have no other option.

Very hard to say EXACTLY what the issue is without looking at it in front of me.

With the clutch off the transmission is disconnected from the engine completely so it will spin freely in gear or not. It would only bind if it was in 2 gears at once assuming there was no other damage.

Oh, I forgot to say, yes the pan can be removed with the engine in the bike. The 2nd and 1st gear fixes can be don with the engine in the bike.

So the trans spinning by hand with the clutch off does not necessarily mean there is no trans problem? Is that correct.. The trans can spin freely even if the shift forks are in the wrong order?

So here is what I think I should do. Remove Exhaust, rear wheel, final drive. Unbolt the middle drive and remove the shaft. Remove the rear swing arm.

Then I should try to rotate the shaft and the final drive. If it rotates freely then I assume there is no problem..

Then I should try to rotate the middle gear drive. If that is bound up I should remove the clutch and see if that frees up the middle gear drive. Is that correct? If by removing the clutch and I still can't rotate the drive then I need to dive into the transmission. Is that correct?

Please let me know if I am missing something.

There's no reason to remove the swing arm or any of that. Just taking the 4 bolts out of the U-joint will disconnect it from the middle drive back. That's what we have all been trying to tell you.

When you put it into 1st and it makes a terrible sound, is the sound coming from the transmission or the middle drive?

I couldn't tell where the sound was coming from. I turned off the engine ASAP. It sounded like a bag of rocks and the rear wheel was "jerky" in it's movement. I will remove the bolts as described without taking off the swing arm.

Does anyone think it might be a clutch problem? That would be easier to fix then pulling the transmission apart.

The first step in a problem solving exercise is a good visual inspection. Most mechanical problems can be seen.

Drain the oil, take the right side cover off and watch the clutch action when you pull the hand lever. Rotate the wheel.

                                Still no joy?
Take the bottom off, lay down and crawl under with a bright light, and shift with your hand and watch the action.

While you are under there, rotate the wheel back and forth and see how far back up the drive train there is motion. This assumes that you put the u-joint back together.

No need to pull the tranny until you know what the problem is.
