The parts list in CBugs site says that the bolts are washer (flange) based.
Part number 90105-08066-00 #39 in this illustration.http://www.yamahamotorsports.com/par...S1100G_-_1980)
They go in from the front, and thread into the U-joint flange. Check the internal threads to make sure that the PO didn't do something dumb, like force the wrong pitched bolts into the hole. And then use a smaller diameter bolt and nut clear through to "FIX" it.
Torque them real tight. (I can't find a torque spec at the monment).

Is there any way you can take a pic of your u joint bolts? I know it's a lot to ask I can't seem to find the ones that belong there. The darn microfiche doesn't tell how long they are supposed to be. I really appreciate it. Thanks

I should have several in my bolt bin. I'll get you the size and thread pitch.
If you like I can send you some.Greg

You can measure the length by adding the thickness of the middle drive flange, and the thickness of the U-joint flange. Add a couple of millimeters. You should see a couple of threads sticking through on the back side. And really tighten them. The XJ manual calls for 31 ft lbs.
Did you check to see if the internal threads on the U-joint flange are buggered?
Greg would have the flanged head bolts, which would be better than plain heads, so take him up on his offer.
