Rob, I've gone back over your thread -- awesome build! and I may have misread what you've done but I don't see where or why you removed the internal spacer from the rear wheel.

There shouldn't be any torque on the bearings without a spacer. It will side-load the inner races against the balls and needles and they're not designed for it. It will work for a while but the bearings will destroy the the inner edge of the races unless they're held in position with the correct spacer.

    • Hey Scott, I didn't remove the rear wheel spacer. I just didn't remember seeing one in there when I did the bearings so I checked the parts list and over looked it. Daaaa. OK so I will guess then that the original torque spec is the way to go.
      Thanks

      • Time to buy a chain :-)

I used the inner ring from a used wheel bearing as the main spacer and an assortment of 7/8 inch shim washer from the hardware store to get the rear wheel set up. IT'S TIME TO BUY A CHAIN :-)
The short list to completion is ... CHARGE the battery Daaa, install a chain & a chain guard, switch out the rear brake line, make and install a caliper support arm. remove the balance of the packing out of the Kerker pipe (she was smothering), install seat cowl and mounting hardware, TEST DRIVE :-)

        • I spent most of the day drinking beers and taking care of loose ends and made the short list to completion even shorter. The rear wheel and sprocket are set up but will likely need some fine tuning. Seat is rebuilt and installed as are the side covers. All that remains is to reinstall the headlight, make the rear caliper support and a pipe hanger. Then fine tuning will begin after a test run.
She idles nice and sounds nice but pops a little when given a twist.

Here's a few pics of the bike OUTSIDE for the first time :-) She takes her place OFF the work stand beside her not so evil twin. I must say that while moving this bike around I can notice how much lighter she is compared to the restored stock bike. She feels like a 650.

OH I have some loose ends to take care of but they can be addressed off the work bench. I'm also not sure that I like that Kerker. I think it's meant for a special so is not up swept like it should be. I may find myself glass beading my larger DIA one and using it with a coat of black paint.

                  • Sweet ...

so if I want a bike that a midget like myself can push around, do I have to do all that? ... guess I could buy an R6 but I don't think I could ride it very well. Racer, I am not.

Kiddin' aside looks very nice ... see what you're sayin about the pipe too ... it also doesn't appear that it's as close as it ought to be to the frame either ... perhaps just the angle that the photo was shot at ... I'm sure you'll get it sorted out ... no doubt in my military mind

                    • This morning I got the chain installed after frigging around with that blasted press on master link. It's a O-Ring chain so from what the shop told me there is not spring clip type master link available. The list leading up to getting a safety is short now. I need to make a counter drive sprocket cover and install a chain guard. Not Safety related but the Kerker is coming off and the RC engineering Headers are going on. Carbs are coming off for a jetting change and the fork oil still needs to be confirmed as equal in both legs. The forks are also binding a little so the brace needs some adjustment. I guess I will use SS hose clamp bands to get it right.

                      Chains on

11 tooth counter drive sprocket / 36 at the back

                      Everything appears straight

                      • So the Kerker pipe is off the bike :-( cause it is not the proper fit and just didn't look right. I have glass beaded the RC engineering headers and applied a coat of "very high heat" header paint. Flat black is what it had to be. I tested this pipes fit and it will go on nicely except that I will need to ADD exhaust gaskets to get a seal at the exhaust ports. I also had to move the oil cooler supply lines back real close to the engine as this pipe is a close and tight fit. Main stand can be kept if I chose to do so. I don't have extra exhaust gaskets so the pipe is not installed.... GRRRRRRRR

                          • W0W ~ just W0W!

I just read this entire thread and what an inspiration it is. I want to go this route with my rider SR500.

... "This one is the modified bike that is intended for day in and day out use so I don't have to use the restored bike. This one will go together as clean as the other one but after that ... she's a "runner"

... The restored bike will always be the first bike that gets insured every year and will always be used as it was intended. It just won't be used when conditions are not ideal."
Todd ~ This is exactly my situation with my two SRs, except they are not restored, the are just in great original condition. I'm leaving the "best" of the two completely unmolested, but would really like to do for my daily driver what you have done to your "rider".

I just hope I can find half the skill and attention to detail that you have shown with your work.

Do you want my '81 LH to be your next restoration?

First I've got to upgrade my workshop, less space than yours ~ and colder in the Winter too:
