    It Continues

I farted around in the garage this evening and managed to get almost all the wiring completed and all the rubber is in place. If I can get the coils mounted tomorrow without too much fuss I may even see the engine go into place. As you may notice I am sticking to the SS hardware everywhere I can...

      Can This B Fixed

I was hanging my coils a few minute's ago and noticed one of the wires was loose but it was not loose. The post is broken off down very close to the coil. The posts are hollow with a rather tiny wire running through the center that is soldered at the top of the post. I am doubting that it can be fixed but if anyone has any ideas my ears are open.
Other option is .. Does anyone have a single accel coil to sell.
BLAST ... if this had not happened the engine would likely be in the bike tomorrow.

Something like that I try to think how is that piece put in to begin with?? They installed it at the factory, so is it screwed in? or soldered in?

Just food for thought, not a clue how to fix it myself.

If it's threaded in it would likely come out but even if i can get it out there's the issue with the tiny wire that was running through it. I never even knew the posts were hollow. I do in deed think it's TOAST. Buying a matching single unit is just over 100 bucks with TAX. If I buy a new set I will save about 45 and that's likely what I will do. I have a feeling the wrench contacted the "L" bracket and pushed the post over cause I did not make them very tight. The "L" brackets are needed to make the coils mountable in the factory position. I guess I should have connected the wires first and then put the brackets on.

The only thing like it I have done is the stud for my turn signal that is hollow. One of mine got bent and broke when I staightened it out. I took a piece of Allthread of the same size and drilled the hole in it but it was not metric thread, so I ran a die over one end part way it to make the metric thread which also served as the stop or shoulder. let me thread it into the turn signal side, then used a std thread nut on it inside the headlight box.

As to the wire inside on yours, I wonder how they got it soldered in to start with? Was that end put in first? Just thinking out loud. Probably end up cheaper just to replace it, and probably bugger it up good some other way fixing this. But then what do you have to lose, and might work!

Can you solder a wire lead to the broken post and then connect it to the wiring harness?

I'm with BikerPhil on this. You could use one of those EYE round end wire connectors to fit around the post and solder it to the post. Do you need to secure the small wire inside the post to the post? Soldering it would do it, but putting a small screw into it might also do it, and if you used one with a larger head, it would help hole the EYELET in place along with the solder??

As for buying NEW ACCEL's , you've seen several folks post on here about their experience with the MIkesXS high output coils, they are much cheaper and work quite well, and provide a pretty good oomph of power, possibly not quite as much as the ACCEL, but I don't remember reading the actual power/volt rating for them? 30K, 40K, 50K???? The Mikes are ~35K!

If I can dig out the epoxy that fills the post without cutting or doing more damage to that wire I could likely repair it like that. I will have to fill the base of the post with solder and attach the wire ring in a single operation. It's worth a shot.

I think 2 - 11s is enough for this lad. When the insurance runs out on the kat I will undertake to restore that bike. Anything beyond that will be something different. However, My fully restored 78 is my fav bike to ride :-)

I Popped the engine in this evening

being that I don't have my coils yet I decided to get the engine mounted. If you look close you will see how you can do this alone and not even break a sweet.
                                PICs as usual

                                In position

Sliding boards in place and strapped to the frame which is straped to the stand

                                On her way over

Close to in place, a bottle jack was used to help make it light in the frame for final adjustment

There she be in the frame :-)
