  • Evenin', Mike!

I do like the '850 drive although there are times when it's not helpful. The fuel mileage doesn't change all that much, really, but the engine isn't as frenetic and 'buzzy' at freeway speeds.

When I went to the XS SE rally last year my trusty mobile phone navigator app. routed me to the Iron Horse Lodge via The Dragon... at night. I had no idea at the time but it was fun with the '850 FD, saddle bags, backpack, duffel, faring, and 50 psi in tires for highway riding. I sort of smoked the clutch in the Smokies that weekend but, yeah, I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

There are times when I try to shift down but it's already in 1st, like taking off from a stop riding two-up/heavily loaded or when it's a hot day. Some of the best roads around Simi need the stock '1100 FD but they're still good with the taller gearing.

Then there are times like the other day when I just flat romped on it and I had a total blast! I could feel the front wheel loft; drive train strain, bow and flex, and I could almost swear I could feel every drive line spline engaging and every roller in the u-joint load up, then the whole thing would unwind as the speed and torque leveled out and the front tire quit skimming across the ground. Riding the flex is fun but it's, uh, bad for the drive train and you have to be careful when you let it unwind, there's a lot of energy in there all bound up like a Chrysler torsion bar suspension rod.

That said, the '850 FD itself is a little stronger so it doesn't flex as much as the '750 FD I had before. The '750 drive would 'breathe' as the side cover flexed in and out under heavy load and that eventually scrubbed away the ring and pinion gears and the bearings. It was a hoot.

    • Not sure if it was for the bike or me.
Bought a new helmet. The padding in the liner was disintegrating, helmet getting old.
Bought a metallic silver Shoei gt-air. First helmet I've had that had better cooling airflow with the face shield closed.
Now debris has to get through the windshield, faceshield, tinted retracto-visor, and my glasses.

      • Today I pulled the Pipes, spot painted the frame, replaced the exhaust gaskets, finished the heat wrap on the pipes. Then touched up any spot where the paint was chipped off.

        • New Pacifico Windscreen

I got tired of looking through the nasty old windscreen on the Pacifico. Actually the old windscreen was not safe at night, in the rain or heading at any angle into the sun. Pretty much a milky washout is all I could see in those conditions. All the conditions that will likely happen when I head out to XS North in ten days.

Solution: I got a new 78' Yamaha Pacifico windscreen from Leif Gustafsson down in St Augustine via his website www.bikescreen.com Ordered it Wed and it was delivered Fri. I installed it Saturday.

I about turned purple worrying about drilling the 9 holes but it worked out fine. Nothing broken. Hole alignments are ok and I got it mounted up on the Pacifico just fine. Went for a PM sunset ride to test it out. It was well worth the $200 investment. Fit was very good. Instructions must have been ok since I drilled the holes and tightened the nylon nuts & bolts and nothing broke. It didn't even fall off in the test ride.

          • Finally got around to adjusting the valves in this engine I installed 4 years ago.

Had to change out EVERY shim in there. Only 2 valves just barely in spec on the skinny side so I figured as long as I was there................

            MP tool worked perfectly.

            • I removed the seat cover to patch a small worn spot on the pommel(?) that was cut through and letting the metal seat pan rub the paint off the fuel tank.

Once the seat cover and the foam were removed I discovered a lot of rust on the seat pan. It's not as bad as the '79 pan I had to almost completely rebuild for "Bush" but I did have to buy another gallon of Evapo-Rust -- my new best friend!

After soaking the pan in Evapo-Rust I had to completely strip the paint off the pan when I found 'rust worms" had bored through pinholes and worked their way underneath a lot of the original paint. It'll look good when it's finished and I did save the seat cover but I still have to touch up the paint on the fuel tank.
