lol, indeed! So she got her first full tank of gas in a little over 12 years I figured out how to properly adjust the carb pressure gauges so you can get a clean reading and it made a HECK of a difference!! Also after much swearing and cursing I was able to resolve my stripped bolt on the exhaust pipe. Took her for a mile drive down the road to the gas station and aired up the front tire....but the adapter they have on it was to awkward and wouldn't fit into the back tire to fill it up. Otherwise there are a few little things that will need to be adjusted but she sounds so good at idle!

Yesterday and today,
Replaced rear tire and battery. Fresh fuel, rode the E to work (where it will sit until Tuesday).

Side car
Had the side car on for a week. Loaded with two sails for the boat. Side car sagged on 140 mile round trip. Made changes to how " Inder " is bolted to Yami. Studied Fred in Toon's photo. Was the mount next to the RH foot peg that was the problem. It now goes under the peg. There is enough room for the brake lever to operate. Also connected the steering damper and moved the rig back 1 1/2 inches, and checked the toe in. Still a bit heavy to steer but much better.
Rode down to boat yesterday and smoked a Harley on the way.

Tried to start the 78E it would only spark after I let go of the starter button. Checked the pickup wires two were broken Fixed those and the bike fired right up. Now to start making it look good and finish the assembly.Ty

Got the 78E to run and idle and did not have to make adjustments (other than a longer throttle cable) fond that the newly painted tank still leaks even after using a tank liner. good thing it was only a rattle can job.Ty

I put the clutch in this afternoon but I'm not sure what's up with the new Barnett springs.
The Barnetts are definitely taller than the OEM springs and everything I read had me expecting to have to wrestle with the star plate to get the bolts started but there was no such problem. Even the first bolt was easy to start and and the rest of the bolts followed along like puppies.
I use a 14" extension with a 10mm socket to slowly hand-tightened the bolts 1/8 to 1/4 turn at a time in a star pattern until they seated. Not a problem, that's how I did it with the OEM springs too.
I removed and replaced one bolt at a time to add a dab of Blue Loctite, then torqued them all in the same star pattern to approximately 86.4 in/lb. Yes, the clutch is slightly harder to pull but it's not at all what I was expecting there, either.
The test ride was good; no oil leaks; no clutch slippage; didn't fall on my ASCII going out of the driveway -- I'm sotally toked! :-D

Not sure the Loctite was a good idea on those bolts Scott. I've seen them break but never back out and it may be an issue if you need to remove them again for some unforeseen reason.

I did not torque them either, just cranked them down, then just till I felt comfortable and nothing more. First pull of the clutch was painful, but not it feels just like the old springs.1979 XS1100F

I was expecting to have to use a digging bar for a lever or hook up pulleys like a compound bow or something to set up the bolts but it's not bad at all. The Barnetts were just as easy to start and tighten as the OEM springs so I'm kind of baffled about why people have said they had problems starting the bolts. <shrug> Clutch pull isn't bad either and my left hand's been half dead for well over a year now; can only use two fingers for the clutch.
Blue Loctite? Nah, no problem there, I used it on the clutch bolts "just because" the last time I was in there. There was some used-to-be-blue plastic "stuff" that came out of the threads when I pulled the bolts but I just chased the holes with a tap, then slathered everything with brake cleaner to get rid of the oil and the leftovers.
I use the Blue on the two large Phillips screws for the clutch adjuster cover too but I haven't locked them down yet in case I have to go back in and reset the throwout bearing clearance once the clutch is all settled in to its new happy home.

Yeah, the pull feels really heavy to begin with but as you get used to it you don't notice. If you get on someone else's bike without them it feels way too soft.Greg
