Just don't use chrome polish on the header bends, they will turn the chrome a gold color, DAHIK.

Here's a three for ya,
When the pipes are chrome plated, the plating, being a line of sight proposition, does not get down in between the two headers where they go into the collecter, and soon, the rust appears.
So you should keep an eye on that area, and apply chrome polish and sealer as often as you see any discoloration.
Once the rust grows, it is real hard to get that area clean and smooth again.

Thanks for the words of encouragement.
The oil cooler was on it when I got the bike from the wrecking yard. I'm assuming that originally there was a line directly from below the carbs up to the head. It looks like the PO cut that line and installed the oil cooler in that line.
I was thinking of adding a new oil cooler with a thermostatically controlled electric fan, it gets a little warm here in Phoenix in the summer. Here's some pics:

Yes you are...but not for long
I have used "Blue Job" with good results. It is a fine powder and you only need a small amount at eeach application so don't let the small container put you off.

I rolled Addie out of the garage, beside the snow bank, and fired her up.
Well I think i was more fired up that she wanted to be but after a few tries and a nice back fire she rumbled into life.

I turned the offset mount bracket around the correct way, but I still need an extra 1/2 inch. I'll get a spacer for that and I'll be in business.
What does the center stand normally use as a stop? I can't find any rubber bumper on the bike for the center stand, and with the old exhaust I wasn't too worried about the stand rubbing the exhaust...Guy

The mounts for he center stand are what stops it. It will only pivot up so far. The problem I've had to deal with is the kick lever for the side stand. It's too short to catch easily with your foot to put it down. I actually extended that and curved it up (so it won't drag in the corners) and wrapped it with a piece of rubber heater hose so it doesn't smack the bottom of the muffler. There is no stop for it on the aftermarket muffs like on the stockers.Greg

All of the new Jardines I have bought came with a bracket for stopping the kickstand from hitting. I guess not all after market pipes do that.2-79 XS1100 SF

I got new rubber covers for the foot pegs, it's going to take me a few rides to get used to the squishy feeling on my feet.
As far as the exhaust goes, turns out there was an extra metal L shaped bracket that came with the exhaust. I think that's the center stand stop. I had to add some spacers to the bracket, and cut off the threads sticking out of the center stand bolt, but everything tucks in nice and tight where the old exhaust was. From my standpoint, an added benefit is that the bike's a little quieter now, and there seems to be a little pop in low end performance with the new exhaust.
Here's a link to a series of photos of the finished product.

Blew the vacuum cap off the intake manifold
I'll post this here for lack of a "funny thing happened while driving" category.
I got on my bike to drive home and didn't pull the choke out, so the bike was spitting a little bit. I started driving through the parking lot heard a pop and felt something hit my leg . I knew right away I had popped the vacuum cap off the intake on #3 or #4, turns out it was #4. I stopped walked back and picked up the cap, put it back on and took off again, only to have it pop off again 1/4 mile later in traffic.
I can not believe how poorly the bike ran without that cap! I had put a little larger caps on the intake nipples when I was doing my carb work and figured they were tight enough, I was wrong. I stopped at Autozone and picked up the smallest vacuum caps to put on the nipples. I know these will hold. Unfortunately I suspect I'll destroy the caps when I have to pull them off to sync the carbs next time too.Guy
