Got ALL the color sprayed on "daily Ride". Now I need to wet sand, add the pinstripe tape, and clear coat with the two part paint. Last is one more try with the carbs/intake system. I NEED to find out why #1&2 do NOT like to idle. Bike runs good at 4K and up. The bad part, I want to sell this one so I can fix the other '79.

Not today, but actually last thursday, got a ticket for not stopping at a stop sign. School district cop says I didn't put my foot down. Not happy as I did stop (he never said I didn't stop, just that I didn't put my foot down.)Cy

Over the last couple of days I did some cleanup and minor repairs; removed the B&M Supercooler oil cooler, put in new spark plugs and changed the oil.
Today I took a cruise to the beach and had fun in the canyons. When I got to the beach the tach went berserk, then quit and just jumped a little every now and then on the way home. Fuel mileage was down, too, but I had a pretty good idea why this time.
I pulled the timing cover when I got home and found the vacuum advance line was split and hanging off the vacuum advance pot. The line split and fell off the advance a few days ago so this time I replaced the entire line instead of trying to trim off the end and put it back on.
Next, I checked to see if the tach from the XJ parts bike would work and it did, sort of, but it's just not right. The XJ tach internals are a little different than the XS but it should have worked. I guess it got whacked in the wreck ... bummer.
So, for now I'm totally tachless but at least the fuel gauge still works!-- Scott

Yesterday changed the oil. I used a synthetic blend 10w-30 this time around, see how it goes. Changed the middle and final drive oil too. Had to siphon the rear drive with my Miti-vac because it has a stripped drain plug (it seals, but just spins when I turn it). While doing this I thought about how much easier it was than draining the middle gear from the drain plug that sits right above the center stand cross bar and that I should just use the Miti-vac on both next time. Then I realized I had exactly the same thought the last time I did this.
Oh yeah, changed the plugs too. Hopefully will get up to the White Mountains for some riding today.1981 XS1100SH

I rode it to work today & will tommorow - but on the wknd (sat) I went over 6.5 hrs in the "pouring rain". But on sunday the ride back no rain - so it was worth it. It ran both ways with no issues. If anything was wrong it would of showed up in constant rain. I still have my headlight running on my auxilary with a separate line & switch,(winter project) but thats minor it runs great Man I love that bike - Dan'81 XS1100 LH - Midnight Special - been lookin' a long time for this one.

I'm not too keen on trying to drill the bugger out. I'd more likely just replace the whole final drive unit. After more than 25k miles I haven't observed any significant drop in level on the Yamaha dipstick.
The synthetic blend is an experiment. I'm seeing if it controls some of the burn-off of oil I've been experiencing recently. I have noticed a slight bit more of the slippage, but I'm also due for replacement clutch springs, so it's hard to tell if it's the oil.Last edited by malber; 08-23-2010, 02:35 PM.1981 XS1100SH

BTW, yes, I've had the bike since 2006. 2007 was my first real riding year since I got my MC certification in October of the previous year. I put probably 10,000~13,000 miles on in my first year because it was the new toy. The year after that was when gas went up to over $4.00 a gallon and it was hard to justify riding just for fun. Plus that year I started carpooling so mileage due to commuting was cut. Year after that the bike was laid up in wait of a new exhaust.
