Ah, the XS is fine, mostly. They're getting a little old.. okay, a lot old but in the grand scheme of all things motorcycle the XS is a good machine and it doesn't take too much to keep it running. If people don't burn them up and crash them they're not too expensive to repair and they run great. Just don't mention tires. I'm thinking about messing with Metzeler, lopping Dunlop, mashing Michelin, antagonizing Avon, skinning Cheng Shen, keel-hauling Kenda and burying Bridgestone under a (where else?) a large stone bridge! Did I miss anyone? Pirates, the lot of 'em!

Look on the bright side, it could have been a $50,000 Harley-Davidson Oolah-Ottoman that burned up and the dealer wouldn't cover it under warranty because the Genuine Harley-Davidson digital entertainment center foobar reinversion sensor cap was replaced with an aftermarket cap instead of a Genuine Harley-Davidson cap and the battery wasn't topped off with Genuine Harley-Davidson distilled water from a Genuine Harley-Davidson distilled water dispenser by a Genuine Harley-Davidson factory-trained and certified disposer of all things distilled and dispensable.

Tires... I'm beginning to dislike tires. And stock Yamaha electrical systems.

To bring it back on-topic: today I plugged a hole in the rear tire of my XS and rode to the store to get stuff. The electrical system worked fine and remained trouble-free for the entire ten miles.

    • Today I assemble the carbs, possibly even synchronize them and then have a crack at servicing the brakes.

crap load of time spent modifying it = Priceless
My bike has the XS motor but can't really call it XS11
(or at least it still looks like the XS motor)
it has about 50% of the frame left from the XS bike

              • Rode it to work after finally getting the exhast system replaced. Nice having it not be too loud and not suffering exhast fumes at every stop. Also nice having some horsepower back on the throttle with the back pressure working properly.

                • Pulled the carbs, exhaust and head on the 78. Replaced and lapped my first exhaust valve in #4. Now I just need to do the intake valves and she will live again.

                  • Well, finally replace the mounts for my trunk that were splitting apart. Didn't feel like pay Craig Vetter's price for new ones, and frankly, didn't care for the specs on them when I looked them up. So, got some beefier ones from Grainger, and had to drill the mounting holes out a little, but I've got more load capacity by spec (especially with a better luggage rack that has a higher spec as well) and better shear strength (about 4 times as much actually). It's pretty solid now for the first time. Now to get my rear signals to stop rotating in the holes. I'm thinking gooping them up with RTV. That and locktite on the bolts to keep them from loosening as well.

Oh well, if I didn't always have some little thing that needed to be fixed I wouldn't know it was an XS.

Other than the "pull your arms out of their sockets" power that is.

                      • Replaced the entire wiring harness, thanks to Rasputin!

The harness he sent was in excellent shape. I only changed one connector, the main field connector for the alternator.

Looks like the PO usurped the wiring for the aux fuse for a heated gear plug. Not a bad trade.

I had to change the ignition switch, as the red wire from it was fried. I used the switch from the 80 and taped off the 4th connector (4-way flasher circuit).

Put the innards into the right handlebar switch Rasputin sent so the bike now has the headlight on/off switch as well.

Just have to relocate the wiring for the fairing and get some connectors for the fuseblock.
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

                        • Been awhile since started this thread. And alot of money, but you cant see it. Before and after.....you cant see the money spent .

Anyway installing this now http://www.batterymart.com/p-Big-Cra...L-Battery.html have new carb boots and pods waiting, along with SOFA and new front master cylinder. waiting to buy jets and carb tuning tools.

I seem really lucky with these carbs. I idle at 600 rpm just fine and all ranges are good. Kinda makes me just want to hang on to boots and pods for awhile.

oh yeah, seat isnt bolted on in this pic, just took the fieldsheer saddlebags off from last weekend.

I got them for less than half price from Guy b g ( thanks by the way, you can see the way they look, getting rid of those rearsets yet? , I have two sets of clubmans waiting for them )

Headers getting powdercoated is on the next list also.

                            • I washed up my 79 restored bike for storage and then washed the 78 modified bike for use. I currently don't have a legal bike here that I can ride
:-( I was to get the safety for the modified bike on Friday afternoon so I switched out my insurance on Friday morning. When I went over the see my buddy to ask him to drop by the house for the safety, I discovered that he has been on holidays and will not be back until Tuesday. So I guess it will be safety on Tuesday afternoon and DOT paperwork on Wednesday morning.
