For everyone who doesn't get a pass ahead of time, I spoke with the park officials when I was up there last month. Those folks will simply fall in behind me and I will have collected the money in advance to pay at one time and they will let us come through at once. They still may hand each individual a pass (don't know on that) but one person paying, everybody following is the way they said would work most efficiently. Guys that have a pass ahead of time would then follow IMO.

We'll then gather up the herd and enjoy the ride!

Geez…I just bought my pass less than 2 weeks or so. Rangers told me at that time they didn't think the price would go up this summer. I'll call after the 4th and confirm. The web page still has it listed at $20.00 via on-line and $10.00 in person.

There is a pass for those under 62, price was listed at $80.00 though.

I looked at the Parks site last night and $80 doesn't sound too bad for a year, especially if it's a real interagency pass; need a windshield sticker too. The Feds advise you on their own site to take it as it comes because there are so many different Federal agencies with inconsistent rules and fees that they can't sort it out either and your annual pass may not be honored everywhere.

            • Scott,

That's cool you got the Packtalks.
              I got one too.

Been trying to talk Bohn and Howard into getting one.

4 of those, linked up on a large group ride, are supposed to be able to cover 3 miles! That would be awesome for the guy in the rear of the group to be able to still talk to the leader. If you have 2, we'd only need one more...
(When I'm able to come, that is... )

              You gonna like 'em!
From what I've read, you can put it in a particular mode (shorter range) and possibly pair up with the Sena guys, too.

              • Motoman & Motowoman,

I'm really gonna miss seeing you all this time.
Your "southern hospitality" is one of my biggest regrets of not being able to make this one.

Hopefully, next year I'll get to see you guys.

Ya know, that's a tough decision the guys are suggesting...
Be gracious, and treat you two to dinner out ( which I think is a great idea and you both deserve that...) OR enjoy Anita's southern home cooking?? Hmmmnnn,
That almost seems like a moral delimna, to me! Lol... Tough call...

Take care, my friends. I'll sure miss seeing you this time.

Awesome Ray, Yeah i use it to listen to my music as well and it does surprisingly well at cutting out wind noise for making and answering phone calls. And Scott, we should be able to add yours in as well to a group call. One thing I noticed in testing them out in the Arkansas twisties ... It is definite line of site. Had a very good range on a straight piece of road. Go around a corner with a big hill in between and you lose it. Bit of a drawback there.

Bob, I read a Packtalk review online where the guys made jokes about what to do with the extra twenty minutes they had in the mornings:-

                      forums.bmwmoa.org | Forum | The Garage | Gear | Cardo PackTalk
It got to be a joke in our group that we had nothing to do for the first 20 minutes every morning because we didn't have to waste time on pairing or connecting to each other. Simply turn these suckers on and go!

The deciding factor for me was an install video where they mentioned that your helmet sits flat and doesn't catch on things instead of sitting all wonky and being snaggy.

I just found out why I haven't received the new toys yet: Before I clicked the purchase button to actually order and pay for the Packtalks, I did a lot of online shopping and read reviews after I put the toys in the Amazon cart. The Cart timed out and the order wasn't placed but they should be here by Thursday.

scala rider PACKTALK Duo Bluetooth 4.1 and DMC Mesh Technology Motorcycle Communication and Entertainment System with HD Audio, Connect 2 to 15 riders (Dual Pack) will be shipped by Amazon.com.

I want to try out a set of those Bose 20 noise canceling ear buds with the wired, dangly thing that hangs from your helmet and a set of Bose 30 wireless earbuds. They have a few of each type at Best Buy so I can try before I buy, I'm not sure I like the slave collar for the Bose 30 but the wired controller on the 20 looks annoying too.

                      • If any of you guys have an extra one to bring along, could I put out a request to borrow one?

I haven't been able to purchase one yet, was very helpful pairing up with Bob who was running sweep at the rally last year. He gave me a shout when Joe's bike shorted out, otherwise I would not have realized we lost the back of the pack that stopped to help nearly as soon. Very good and very helpful!

If you're riding' ahead of the herd, take a look back every now and then to make sure it's still there.

                          • Thanks Scott, what do I need to pick up for ear buds or ear piece?

I always ride with simple rubber earplugs, so something that has a good form fit that will also keep out the noise. Any recommendations?

As for the herd, we had come around a corner and crested a rise and I was going down the other side losing a line of sight when Bob crackled through with the quick call that Joe had a problem. Quick thinking on Bob's part to alert me was huge.

                            • Bonz, I didn't know. I've never seen one except on the web so I had to look it up. Unless you have your own speakers already set up for your helmet with a speaker jack then you'll need earbuds.

You should check to see if your helmet will work with a Packtalk spring clip mount, I'd rather not use one of the stick-on patches for your helmet unless you're really going to buy your own after the rally, then you can just keep it instead of trying to peel it off. If the mount will work with your hellmet, find out if you'll need the boom or static mount microphone.

We can't find an online list of what's included in the Packtalk kit, so here's ours:

                              Cardo scala rider Packtalk module.
                              Metal "no screws" helmet mount.
                              Stick-on helmet mount.
                              Alcohol prep pad for above.
Speakers (connects via standard 3.5 mm jack).
                              Boom microphone.
                              Wired microphone.
                              Extra wind socks for mics.
Hook-and-loop stick-ums for mounting the speakers in the helmet.
USB cable and separate wall outlet charger.
Product brochure, helmet mounting instructions and warranty.
Printed User Guide in 5 languages (EN, DE, FR, ES, NL).

Double all of that for the Duo Pack with the two Packtalk modules and all of this can be stored in the nice Packtalk box that contains the kit.
