  • That sounds great, Joe! Hmm, it's dinner time here, time for a break!

I haven't given up but I'm hitting a wall. The new set of standard size piston rings I bought in unmarked, plain white boxes are 1st oversize and won't fit in the cylinder bore. <banging-head-on-wall>

Fortunately, I keep everything organized as I pull stuff apart so the 'old' 18K mile rings are already cleaned and neatly stacked in the correct order. I was going to inspect them just for grins after I got the engine running but they can go right back on their pistons and back in the bores. This is probably the least of the major sins I have committed against this poor engine to date and I can only hope Columbo will forgive me this time too and not spew clouds of smoke, oil, and parts all over the road to Colorado.

      • LMAO!

Meh, it's just metal and it'll work or it won't. I should have the jugs fitted and the head on sometime tonight. I'm not in the mood to mess with timing the cams and shimming the valves so that'll be tomorrow's bundle of joy.

        • Sorry to say I won't be able to make it to the rally this year. SWMBO has us scheduled for the next several weekends and I can't get out of it, probably because I took 2 weeks off to go to XS 11 North in Brockville, Ontario, Canada. (5,122 mile trip.)

Take lots of photos and have a good time. Hoist a few for me. Wish I could be there.

          • That's a drag, Jerry. Well, not being with your family, missing the rally. I'll probably wind up taking a car to Colorado so don't feel bad about missing out on anything.

I skipped putting the jugs and heads on last night to get some sleep but the egine's back together. The cams aren't in yet and I should be able to get that done tonight but I've discovered that the #2 spark plug hole is a loose fit. It looks like it got reamed out with one of those thread repair tools or something and it may not hold a spark plug. I have to let the gasket sealer set up overnight before doing a compression check and lighting off the engine and there's no rushing it.

            • Scott I had an old 68 VW that would blow the plug out the hole when you created backpressure - wrap it in tin foil and snug it back in. Don't use downhill engine braking.

I'm 50/50 on putting in a Heli-Coil or a Time-Sert before cooking off a perfectly good new head gasket.

As long as the plug torques down good I wouldn't get too worried about it. These plugs have a long shank, plenty of thread, to hold them in.

The 4.6 and 5.4 Ford V8s only have about 4 threads holding them in. Granted they blow plugs out quite often but you see my point.

                  • Yeah, I've read about the insane plug design on those Ford (Triton?) engines. What were they thinking?

You've convinced me though, I really want to see how the engine's going to run so I'll put the cams in -- hopefully without bending any valves -- and see if it holds. If it doesn't, I can change the exhaust studs too while I'm fixing the head.

I've had to repair a few, some of the later ones the plugs like to snap off in there. There is a whole line of special tools just to fix THAT better idea.

                      • Hey guys,
Have you seen the latest forecast for the Canon City area this weekend?

Looks like storms every day...through next Monday.
Cool weather leaves as I leave out there on Thursday from Oklahoma.
Cool weather arrives here this week.

                        So... Fri/Sat/Sun there...mid 90's.
                        Here...low 70's. Figures.

Heard right now it's REALLY raining there...

Oh, and forecast for Tulsa on Thursday... 70% chance of strong storms...clearing by the afternoon.
By afternoon, I'll be in Salina Kansas, met Bohn, and in the truck headed west.
Looks like a wet ride all the way to Salina.

So, my question is...you guys still planning on camping out this weekend if it rains the whole time?
Bohn says there is a 24 hr cancellation notice required for the motel.

Well, isn't THAT special. I'll probably wind up driving a car to the bike rally anyway.

I thinking seriously about putting the original '80G head back on and mess with the '79 head some other time.

The cams wouldn't turn to line up the dots at TDC so I put down the wrench before I bent a valve. As I was setting down the wrench something went, "CLACK!" and the Intake cam moved. I figured I'd bent or broken the #4 Intake so I pulled the head to check it out.

The valves are all good, pristine even but it looks like the #4 Intake lobe on the cam was hitting the head at the valve hole right next to the shim bucket and that's why I couldn't turn the cam. I'll mess with it tomorrow after I get some sleep, then figure out how it happened and how to not do that again. I guess I'll fix the spark plug hole and do the exhaust studs while the head's off.

                          .

                          • Know it makes all the previous efforts seem like an act in futility, but the original head you already know is good may be the better option.

Plannin' on it rain or shine. Too hot and dry in that area anyways.....afternoon occassional rains will help keep the heat at bay. Had 102degrees here at my place in Junction today.......good thing there's no humidity that goes with that.
