  • XS11 Sainthood?

I really should have posted this before my last post.
DiverRay almost didn’t make it because he and Scot spent so much time working on my bike that he didn’t have the time to work on his own. These guys performed a tranny/clutch transplant from a crashed hot rod XS1185 with only 25,000 miles on it. I now have a very solid slip free clutch and a fully functional tranny with the bevel gear fix. With the time and parts that these guys put into it, if I had gotten the work done at a commercial shop the bill would have far and away exceeded the value of the bike.
The words of Wayne and Garth (Saturday Night Live,) kept running through my mind: I’M NOT WORTHY, I’M NOT WORTHY!!! I finally had to consider that these guys aren’t so much concerned with the owner of the bike as they are with keeping these old bikes running: the owner has only to be truly appreciative of these bikes.
I would have been so bummed out if Ray couldn’t make the rally that I absolutely could not have enjoyed myself and probably would not have attended the Rally myself.
I propose an additional level above Guru: that being XS11 Saint. Ray and Scott would surely qualify!
On a more serious note, catch my thread “The warranty has expired on my body!”
    Special Ed
Old bikers never die, they're just out of sight!

My recently re-built, hopped up '79 Special caught fire and burned everything from the top of the engine up: gas tank, wiring, seat, & melted my windshield all over the front of the bike. Just bought a 1980 Special that has been non oped for 9 years. My Skoot will rise from the ashes and be re named "The Phoenix!"
    I've been riding since 1959.

    • It's just metal!

Ed, I'm glad I got to schmooze in Santa Cruz for a while helping you get your bike running but I was more concerned about the owner than the bike -- warranty schmarranty!

I'm really glad you two made the rally so just say hello to Gypsy and the lovely cellist Grace for me and don't be puttin' any crazy notions in these fellers' noggins!

      • Well, dammit, now I feel like an idiot for missing this one. It looks like that road over to Big Sur was do-able, and coming over the hills to see the blue Pacific always inspires awe, even thought I know from maps that the ocean is right there.

Next year I'm back on the job. I see that several guys stepped up to run and support the rally, and I thank them for that. I also see several new faces and I'm sorry to have missed meeting them. And of course the OGs of California XSivism, Ray, Ed Ralph, the SD Crew, Scott, and Tkat, who've followed the caravan from Yosemite to Santa Margarita.

For planning purposes...have we ridden-out the Central Coast roads? I like that KOA and I think that next year, if we stay there again, we'll focus on heading south a little more. Anyway, shall we stick to this locale, or try elsewhere? Back to the hills? Also, keep June 10-11-12, 2011, in mind.

          • Was a good time and riding! SWMBO enjoyed meeting all and liked the "time-out" she had. Sun. the two of us took the truck and run around on PismoBeach then up north to the elephant seal watch. Speaking of hills LoHo, several at the Rally threw out the idea of havin a gathering here in Colo. next June or July. If some were seriously interested, Soutwest corner of state is where I would put it on. Some wide twisty highways at over 10,000ft., superb scenery and a 220mile ride not seeing the same thing twice.

            • Rally or Rallies?

Hey Motoman and LoHo,,,,I would be up for both a central coast rally and a Colorado rally, maybe one in june and one in july. Both have totally different kinds of roads,,,,maybe members from all over for the Colorado rally, being more east. I suggest you Lords of Rallydom, Motoman and LoHo, talk it over and see what you guys come up with for the summer rally, rallies 2011. It would be nice to try something different like a Colorado rally, but if both or one works out, the XS group will always enjoy. At least in Colorado, Motoman and Jerry wont have to bust their butts getting out to California. Regards, Mike, one of the S.CAL Xsessives....................

Hey now, it's safety-fat on me but if I do one or two more 700 mile rides in this heat there won't be anything left but my boots!

Right on, I'm glad you two had fun! Sorry about taking off and leaving you behind on the Saturday ride. That was totally bogus[1] and won't happen again!

                • It all worked out, just wasn't quite up to doing "time out" all day at the cabin with wife. 3Phase, need to have a bounty out on those electrical gremlins and my boots stayed inside at 102degrees here past couple days.

                  • 2011 Cali Rally

My (and SWMBO's) $0.02: We like riding the central coast area for a couple of reasons. Mainly, the weather is way better than what will be imposed on us in the Central Valley / Sierra areas (I'm talking heat and fires here.) Second is that there are still roads to ride to the south and east. We rode 58 home and it was great. It has been fairly recently paved, has next to no traffic, and if you don't want to ride it two ways, there are alternative return routes that are also very interesting.

We'd not want to do Hunter-Ligget again, once was enough.

                    Ralph

                    P.S.

Anybody up for a ride / mini-rally Columbus Day weekend (if you have the Mnday off)?

Reffi, I might be able to do that, I'll put it on the 'fridge calendar. There are plenty of roads left to ride on the central coast and I agree with you, your wife and several other members: no Hunter-Liggett.

I always enjoy driving/riding the Nacimiento-Fergusson Road, even with the tall gearing from the 750 mod and a full set of luggage on my XS it was still a lot of fun for me but it wasn't for everyone. Besides, once you've seen the Pacific Ocean 'pop' into view from the crest of the road it's just another road anyway.

                      • Anyone going for a ride this weekend?

I just finished checking the valves on Columbo. They're fine so everything should be back together and ready to roll tomorrow morning.

                          • Garth, that Pacifico still has wiring problems? Bummer.

My new Special, "Bush", has a Pacifico but it looks like it's been broken and repaired several times around the lower mounts with either bad ABS cement or aged aardvark vomit; not sure which, maybe both.
