Really ready

I am SO ready for this ride. Missed the one last year and decided to go this year even if it meant loading the credit card. LOL Are you guys from SD gonna meet me at McDonalds, Magnolia/I15? I recall somewhere seeing you were gonna leave around 6 AM and meet me at 8 AM. I figure you should be there before 8 AM as it's about 100 mi. Anyway, I'm REALLY ready to go.

There are trees, but a little ways apart, if you bring a long, couple of ropes there should be enough support for a hammock. If you buy a cheapie 1-2 person tent at Walmart and a cheapie 1.99 blow up air mattress, they are actually pretty comfy. The temps are warm enough you dont even need a sleeping bag, just a blanket, which saves luggage room. So, bring a lot of rope for the hammock and there are trees, and cold beer, ice, food and stuff at the campstore. Bring a camera, lots of cool xs1100's. CHeers, Mike in S.DIego

Alright, well I've decided I'm packing the hammock, if I can't put it up I'll use it like a bivy sack, I've done that before and it works out ok.

The lack of tent and mattress aren't the issue, I used to be somewhat active back packer so I've got several tents and all kinds of "ground pads" but after buying and using my hammock, well it just doesn't compare. Its more comfortable then an air mattress, packs smaller and lighter then a tent, you don't need any type of extra to put under the tent or your sleeping bag etc. The only reason I keep the tents around is because of the family, I haven't yet found a 3 person hammock.

Well, Ed's bike will be ready to roll, but I don't think I'll be going on two wheels! I have a VERY BAD exhaust leak on the MNS, and the "daily ride" is running on two/three, and sometimes four cylinders. I need a few more days to try and trouble shoot, but I just don't have them. I'll try and tear into the bike Wednesday, but I'll be pulling the fairing, and checking valves AFTER work. I have just three more days at my present part time job, and Monday I start a "new" job 35 miles from home.
Wish me luck, as I may not even go down if I can't ride.....

Hey ray, hope things work out and you can make it. I've been dealing with a bunch of last minute "to-do's" as well, although most of mine are things I want to get done but not "critical" This week I've replaced my clutch plates, attempted to fix 2 oil leaks (twice now), installed a new trunk, fixed a leaky rear brake piston seal, fixed a broken side cover, and cleaned my gas cap vent. I've still got about 15 more things on my list, tonight I'll be tackling the right side crank seal hopefully, and I have to pack, oh and the only time I have to work on any of this is after my son goes to bed at 9:00pm. I'd offer to lend you my 81 to ride, but its not plated or insured....

easy fix?

Hey Ray, if its a leak on the exhaust, I have an xs with some galvanized steel sheeting that was wrapped around and tightened with a couple of big hose clamps. It works great just looks a little different. It has no leaks, I took off and there are huge holes on both sides that rusted out the cans. Put it back together and it sounds factory. Hope that can fix up your bike, unless the leaks are at the head, then other fixes.....it wouldnt be the same without you there, and LoHo. Anyway, good luck, hope its an easy fix, try the galv. metal sheeting wrap and clamps. If you really need a bike and yours can't be fixed, drive down to S.D. pick up one of mine to ride up and back with our crew, then drive home. Darn, Ray, new spark plugs didn't taken care of the miss? At least the 'new' tee on your carburetors doesn't leak but after the work we did on Ed's bike it developed a slow drip at the tee between #3 and #4 carburetor and I didn't have time to R&R them before I left on Monday.

I'm waiting for a part from the local NAPA/Yamaha that should be in today but I've finished most of what I had to do here at home this week. If you're short on time I could finish prepping my bike, pack for the rally and ride back up to Santa Cruz then ride to the lake with y'all on Friday.

Mike: I think the left-hand exhaust pipe heat shield next to the frame on Ray's Midnight Special broke through the pipe. The finish on the pipes is in pretty good shape and it would be a shame to mess them up since they're harder to find than gnat teeth in bug spray factory.

We're leaving around ten AM, Thursday. We'll be at the Motel 6 in Paso Robles. Friday we'll be riding with the Colorado contingent and will meet up with arrivals at the KOA in the PM.
