That ebay kicker is the emergency set up. See the rubber boot? And the one on your bike swivels. The ebay one Is put away with that clip and bolted on the spline to kick it then put it back.

usually castroll
just used Orielly's brand 10-40 conventional
The oil flush cleaned it out much better than I expected. The oil looks clean in the window now- has not for several changes.
I went 50 mi with the mystery oil added, left it overnight, 50 mi today. Then changed it hot and the filter.

You might want to consider swapping to a good quality motorcycle oil. Car oils are known to cause excessive sludge in motorcycles.

Yes! I filled mine with an excellent CAR engine oil thinking there was no difference. Big mistake. Soon after the starter clutch would spin and not engage properly. I thought I'd have to replace the starter but some some wise members
said to switch to yamaha 10-40 first. That was 3 years ago. It cleared up the problem right away and I only use yamalube now since IT WORKS.
YMMV

Last time I used Kawasaki motorcycle oil that I had bought in bulk on E Bay. Bel-ray is what I used to buy but was always told don't put synthetic oil in a wet clutch older bike.Last edited by oldyam80sg; 05-01-2024, 05:55 AM.1980 XS1100 SG

Yes, it was the gears that I was focusing on. The swing out kicker came from a late 70's Yamaha. Maybe 850?Comment

Here's a video that gives you a no BS look into motor oil. I'll continue to use 15W40 Diesel oil despite what most people claim to know.

A good mechanic here won't touch the oil seals but will put a kick-starter on. But... If I get parts wrong or missing, he'll put it back together charge me twice- won't leave a bike apart in limbo in his shop.80 GComment

A good mechanic will install a simple seal without hesitation. Not sure why he would not touch the seals. It's arguably the most important part of the modification. Don't buy another cover with a used seal or you will have yet another oil leak. The seal must be new and installed carefully so you don't nick it.
