  • starter clutch slip

Warm motor starts great. Cold motor may start first try or slip for 10 min. Feels like it got worse after acct installed.

Can a kick-starter be put on an '80g without splitting cases?

    Will thinner oil help?

    Any ideas?

My Goldwing had starter clutch issues and there was an awful lot of sludge in the oil the first time I changed it. Since servicing it would require pulling the engine I opted to run about 4oz of Seafoam in the oil for about 100 miles and drained it. Pretty sure there was some sludge or other gum in the starter clutch because it helped tremendously. Didn't cure the problem but made it more livable.

I agree with LAB3. A little flush could not hurt. However, this issue is sometimes the result of excessive crankcase moisture. It is common with Goldwings and other bikes that are not driven long enough and have not "burnt out" the unwanted moisture. Short (anything under 250 miles is short) trips in cooler weather can cause crankcase moisture. Condensation like on the outside of a cold drink on a hot day. Huge amounts of moisture can be generated by improper heat cycles such as starting your bike in the winter just to hear the motor. Very bad. This issue can be cured by a good 500 mile ride in the Arizona desert heat followed by a prompt oil & filter change. Start the bike on a good hot day, get on it and don't stop driving until you have gone through three states. Burn out that water. This will positively cure your problem and you get to ride your bike through three states.

        XS1100's and cold weather starts.
The XS1100 running 20-50 motor oil does NOT like trying to start at 40F. If you ride in cold weather, as I did, you need to change to 10-40 oil for the winter, and back to 20-50 for the summer. The thick oil and starter clutch problems have been know about for years, but there are a lot of new owners on here.

Hey Eric, Jonathan probably has everything you need for the kickstart mod, I would definitely try the MMO/aka transmission fluid flush and make sure the new oil you add has no friction modifiers. You really shouldn't have a problem with 20/50 with Florida temps.

Oh, and yes your 80 should be no problem converting, just the 81-82 were missing essential components.

I have an 80 motor in my 78. Added a used kicker gear cluster from a 78/79. You must remove the clutch and add a new kicker seal but it's all bolt in. Works great.

By the way, this is one of the rarest XS11 parts known to man. The elusive emergency kick start frame clip that is bolted under the battery box. I have been looking for one for a few years now. Only on 78 and 79 XS11s.

That damn clip is never mentioned in any parts diagram. There is no known part number.

4 oz of marvel mystery oil and it's working better. I plan on going more miles then changing to 10-40 for awhile.

                        I still want a kickstart- that's a bit to do...we'll see.

Deebs, I don't know what this part is for, but I found it in my misc. parts hardware box. Might it be the clip you are looking for? Seems like it would fit the kicker. But then it might just as well be a wire harness clip or something else.

                          No Clue!

I will try and take a picture of the one that is in my 78 frame. We will see if it matches up. The picture I posted seems to fold over quite a bit and fit the footrest of the emergency kicker. It should snap in with a "click" I believe.
