And oil could run down under the right side cover from the front and make the seal leak seem worse
I believe the answer to this is yes. I have oil under both L + R side covers and neither of my crankshaft seals leak. The wind will blow that oil all over the place making it very difficult to pinpoint leaks.

Once these cylinder O-Rings go bad, oil will eventually seep past the base gasket, up the cylinder head studs and out...

ID:	879517 Looks like the tensioner bolt and gasket are good. Leaking from the inside right bolt and for awhile.

Probably from a Venturer (note that the Venture was the 81H).

Some tensioner housings are thinner than OEM which makes the bolt bottom out.

I also wrote in a later post it was from a 1990 V-Max not from a Venturer. It doesnt leak at all.

Yes. The bolts are different. I did install correct bolts for the tensioner.

The cylinder bolt is what I meant to say is where oil is leaking.

I have an oil leak at the chain tensioner. Can it be anything else than the gasket behind the tensioner. It's a 1978 XS1100

Yes, there is a seal on the original XS1100. It plugs the hole on the outside. You can try and clean it really well and then seal it with high temp silicone.

Usually it is the plug on the end. Easy and inexpensive to replace the plug with a new one. I also use high temp silicone when I replace them.
