Yeah I guess. I'll let Brian speak about his plans but you could be a contender for the long distance prize.

      Losing my Rear End

I've been working on the hind end for the past couple of weeks:

I have everything cleaned up and ready to go back together.

I did have a couple of problems:

      (1) I replaced the Right-Rear bearing with one I had on the shelf. I bought it when I did the Bagger and thought it was a good idea to grab a spare for $18 + shipping (at that time). It was normal before I put it in. The installation went OK, but as I expected, the center collar fell out as I pounded it in, and one of the needle rollers fell out. When I was done and put it back together, it took some mild force to push the collar back into the bearing. The roller action was stiff, but still smooth. So I continued to install the outside collar and the seal, thinking it would loosen up with some exercise. It didn't really loosen up as much as I hoped. It bothers me, so I ordered another seal and I'm gonna open that side and pull out all the needles and clean out the old stiff grease and see if it works better with fresh grease

      (2) I initially tapped the swing arm seals in as far as they would go. That's NG, because there is no stop and they compress too much on the bearings, adding resistance and locating the lip too far inboard to mate with the spacers. I was ably to remove and reuse the seals without any damage to them. Usually I kink the spring in the seal when I try to do that. Second time I made them flush with the housing, and they felt a lot better.

      (3) The driveshaft rubber boot developed some cracks when I was washing it, so I'll have to find something else to do besides assembling the rear while a replacement boot is on order. Number (1) might consume an evening. Fixing the intermittent garage heater is another.

      Spring is upon us soon!
      -Mike

        Woes

No joy saving the rear needle bearing. The needles don't come out as I imagined. Something seems wrong, even though it rolls without without any glitchy, notchy behavior. It just seems too tight.

I'll have to bite the bullet, so I ordered all new rear bearings and seals, and I'll have to do it over.

Consequences of a bearing failure are NG.

Hi Mike, may I suggest using a press to install the bearings. You may have distressed the cage by using a hammer. An all thread through the hub with adequate blocks, washers, or steel plates on the opposite side of the bearing to be installed and a socket of the correct size or the old bearing outer race sliced with a wafer wheel on top of the new bearing going in. HTH GL

P.S. I did the same thing with my left SA seal and had to redo but I did the right right.

            Schming:

Translation for my simple mind: Threaded rod with a socket or the old race.

            Good advice.

            What's a wafer wheel? (about 3 lbs? ; like a Henway?)

Wafer wheel - thin abrasive cutting disc for a 4, 4.5 or 6 inch angle grinder. Any bigger they get too flimsy at speed and can come apart.

Slice the old outer bearing race so it comes back out of the bore after pressing the new in.

                Schming:

It's funny how the same words can have a different meaning.

                What I read:
"...with a wafer wheel on top of the new bearing going in."

                What you meant:
"...the old bearing outer race sliced with a wafer wheel... "

I apologize, my punctuation and order of words was lacking in my post.

You read right, but the writing wasn't written right in the first place.

This slight discombobulation is why we need an updated pic hosting whatchamacallit !!!

Hey Mike. You remember that there was an error in the Clymers about the torque on the swing arm pivot gizmos, right? It specified way too muck torque.

I probably would have noticed it was extreme and remembered, but with your reminder I definitely will be aware.

I believe the "H' is just an addendum to the original manual.
I'll be interested to know what you find the vendor has.
I have the regular manual from Catatonic Bug.
