Honestly, between the lack of the airbox, pods, or whatever, versus your drilled slides, your airbox dillema should be the least of your worries. Do what you gotta do to get as-close to stock as possible.

OK, so I have a air box that I purchased a few years ago. I think what I am going to do is purchase new slides and try to go back to stock. I have a feeling I will be chaising the tuning issue for a long time if I stick with the PODS. So here is my question. What jets should I start with if I have a air box and Mac 2 to 1 exhaust? I know we have the same bike, but do u have the '79 carbs? Stock, you should have 137.5 Mains, and 40 Pilot jets(?). Start there. Plug chop come Spring.1979 XS1100F

The easiest is going back to stock. The stacks in the stock airbox are almost 4" long. With those on there's not much room for a pod filter between the end of the stack and the frame. You could get fancy and build your own filters. Uni Filter sells it's filter material in sheets but then you are practically building an air box.
BTW, what do you do with your crankcase breather when you run pods?Living to EXcess.

Rev,
No. I didn't get to the carbs yet. I spent part of Sunday on the BMW, as it was 80F in the afternoon.... I'll get to the carbs in storage after work today, and let you know.Ray Matteis

I would love to live in a place that I could ride all year long. It's -13 today in Wisconsin. My goal is to get these carbs to work well before May. Any suggestions on where I should start as far as the jets. I have a 2 in 1 mac exhaust.

As SpecialEd runs a MAC, I would say go 1 up on the mains, and start from there. If you need to turn the screws out more than 2 1/2 times, go 1 size larger on the mains. IIRC, Ed has 1 up, and about 2 1/4 turns on his carbs. This is with a stock air box, K&N filter installed.Ray Matteis

So I assembled my airbox and will soon be in the process of going back to stock. So for those of you with the air box, what are you using for a filter? Is the K&N filter so much better than the uni or foam filters? I don't want to spend three times as much on a filter if I don't need to.1979 xs1100f

Hey rev, I read a lot of good things about the k&n drop in. I'm on the same boat as you, reverting back to stock. I believe uni offers a filter for around $15, an oem will run you about $40 and a k&n will set you back about $55. I went with the k&n because I know I'll never have to buy another and it only cost a little more than oem. Plus, I'm a sucker for a good sales pitch: more hp, more tq, more mpg (we'll see)...81 xs1100 SH

Buy the K&N filter ... it's a quality product and you will be pleased with it.
And as Ed (phatts27) alluded to, you can use it indefinitely ...Last edited by Prisoner6; 01-30-2015, 05:46 AM.Marco
