WOW! These slides are expensive. Perhaps it is cheaper to purchase an entire new set of carbs. Anyone have any slides they would like to sell?

... would it be possible to epoxy or solder the "modded" drilled holes in your original slides ?

Let me look at what I have, Rev. I MAY have a set of slides, but I need to pull and check them, as the carbs went through an engine fire.
As for color tune, a set of gauges to set the carbs will make it run as well as anything else, and ARE the proper way of setting up a multi-carb engine. You should be able to get a 4 gauge set on ebay for about $100. That and a box fan are all you need.

You'll probably have more luck buying another complete carb set rather than trying to track down four good slides. Now personally, I'd go with another '78-79 carb set as that will allow you to rob parts if needed, and I think the early carbs are a bit better in terms of performance and tunablity (but not fuel economy). But either type will work, you just need to jet accordingly. Make sure your timing/timing advance is right, and it wouldn't hurt to check to make sure the cam timing is right too.

Not really, as maintaining correct slide weight is critical too. Those Dynojet kits sold a lot of Harley slides, if there was a way to fix them the Harley boys would have found a way....

If I do find new slides what size jets do you all recomend for pods. I read the jetting guide posted by Denny Zander and he suggests moving up three jets on the main to 145 and one for the pilot to 45. Does that sound like a good starting point?

Be conservative... I'd start at no more than one size up on the mains and leave the pilot alone if using the early carbs. That jetting guide is a bit out of date these days IMO, given the different fuel available now. Try stock jetting to start with, that will at least give a good baseline. The later carbs were run leaner for emissions reasons, those I would bump up one size to start with.

I found my first 1951 HD in a big garage, pigeon crap and feathers covered it. Guy wanted more but I bought it for $125 and spent near a year getting it road worthy with help from my dad, I was 14 years old.

Why couldn't the slide be tapped and aluminum rod threaded and turned into the enlarged hole made in the slide and then drilled to spec ? Then the weight would be near exact.

                      Worth a try, Yea/Nea ?

                          To hard to drill through.
Could drill next to, use the set screws just to plug the over sized holes ?
Would change the weight a bit more.
I swear I saw tiny aluminum rod at Ace.

Do you think a set screw could be drilled out to the original size hole.

How sensitive are the slides to weight? Aluminum would be pretty light.

It's not just the weight, but it's also the fact that the original hole is a metered air orifice. That was considered by some to be the main problem with the drilled slides; the home-drilled holes just weren't as consistent in air flow as the factory holes. IIRC some did try to repair the altered slides, but still chased tuning issues until new ones were fitted.
