Well, I hope you read the fine print in that advert? That MC is for other brands, but not PNP for Yamaha because of the right hand mirror. Ours are reverse threaded on the right side, but this one says you will need to get an adapter to use your OEM mirror, or get a regular right hand threaded mirror for the right side!?

It is the smaller 12.7 mm bore which is even a little smaller than the stock XJ's 14mm. It is designed for single caliper functionality, so it should work fine, but that's why you felt like you weren't getting much braking power when you grabbed the front brake handle/lever because you're only using 1 rotor/caliper with the front lever!

SOME folks don't like the linked system, and separate them, putting both front calipers on the front handlebar lever/MC, and then the rear only on the foot pedal. I have a FRONT XJ style MC on mine...I got it from a local bike parts breaker years ago before I KNEW the difference between the XS and the XJ's MC. I first had to pull the lever all the way to the grip, and even pump it a few times before it would give me any real braking action....but this was with the OEM VINYL lines! Once I put on the SS lines, it was night and day, and I then had a very firm front brake lever without crushing my fingers against the grip! I have since installed some dual caliper FZR600 calipers with a MAJOR MOD to my forks, but the little capacity front MC is even more firmer with even LESS movement!

Due to the proportioning valve for the rear....it sends like 60% of the fluid to the front, and 40% to the rear, and so that's another reason why the rear felt spongy, not to mention a possibly crudded up Caliper Piston and such??

So...plugging up the front section of the rear MC valve from what I've heard will still only give you about 1/2 of the pressure/action vs. an XS rear MC that was designed to drive the rear alone.

Oh...and like Scott and Harry, I too earned the Indy Rick BRICK award this last year, had just filled up the bike at the gas station close to the hotel AFTER the long day's ride. Went to turn around at the end of the pump station, too much clutch, too little throttle and too little speed, and whoomp, down I went on my right side! I also didn't try to catch the bike with my foot, and thankfully my 1/4" angle iron mounted forward controls/footrests helped keep the engine from totally crushing my ankle inside my riding boots! I was able to extract myself out from under the bike and get it righted fairly quickly without loosing too much fuel out of the gas cap!

    Keep at it! T.C.

Well the correct stock mirrors are no where to be found... I'll probably put one on somewhere... maybe I'll go without one for a while?!

I don't know if I've said this on this thread already, but I bought this bike as a few piles of... stuff, and I'm putting it back together... but not restoring it to stock due to missing parts, and wanting to build a ridiculously huge cafe bike etc.

Hey! Dylano! You're doing great but this thread is worthless without pictures!

If you need some help or just a break from the slow-delivery carburetor jet-setting lifestyle, a daytrip up north would be a hoot and give me an excuse to test the rear new wheel bearings and seals -- just to make sure they roll you understand!

Erm, yes, I live about 160 miles south of you in Simi Valley, California, as it says in the upper right-hand corner of my posts. Yours says that you're in San Luis Obispo, California and we, all of the XS11.com members, are all over the planet, actually. This is a global web site but as much fun as it would be to see it, not everyone shows up for the Cali Rally.

Send me a PM with your contact info and I'll try to make a day ride out of it. Oh, and scroll down the main Forums page and take a look in the "Rallies (North America)" forums to see what else is going on, there are a lot of rallies being set up for this summer.

              • Oh!!!!!!!

I'm not sure how I've forgotten about this until now, but....

On a mikuni rebuild tutorial, it says there is supposed to be this little rubber looking plugs, that seems to plug off the pilot jet on the bowl side of the carb.... I don't have those... please tell me that matters and if I get them it will help it run better! What are those for and are they important???

                • Some require them and some don't. If there is a passage drilled between the pilot well and the main well to feed the pilots then the plug is required. If no passage exists then the pilots feed directly from the bowl and the plugs will cause the pilots to starve.

                  • In general the XJ will not use those plugs. If you have that passage Greg is talking about then you have some screwy carbs.

I just bought some 50 pilots and some 122.5 mains...
That is what I'm gonna start with and honestly I have high hopes!
                      Where would that passage be?
Would it just be a little hole drilled next to the needle jet under the main, and the tube that the pilot is recessed in connecting them?

Well, that depends: do its brakes work? Columbo's still fully dressed so, aye, we can wallow like a garbage scow against a warp-driven FZR.

If you have the original XJ carburetors they do not need the plugs for the pilot jet wells so rest easy.

I can bring up a spare set of stock XJ carbs that I know are working correctly because I had them on Columbo when I rode to North Carolina and back last year. I also have a official Yamaha factory valve shim removal tool and a few valve shims if you don't find a 'tuit and R&R the valve shims yourself.

Here's a pic with a sewing needle run through it so you can see. But, as Nate said, unless you have an older set of carbs from an XS it won't be there. XJ's didn't have it.

They're my spares for troubleshooting and other "situations" where I need a set of known-good carbs and don't have the time, money, or the inclination to dink around with an unknown or flakey set.

                              I would LOVE the tool.
You may use it but I can't afford $100 to buy a replacement!

Only prob is, I wouldn't be able to go on a ride till fri or sat. and on fri I can borrow one from a shop! That said shop also will trade me shims, if mine aren't screwed up!
Not a problem. I still have some stupidity work to do before I can ride anywhere. I hosed one of the new rear wheel bearings yesterday -- the rare and expensive one, of course -- when I put it in the wheel so I have a couple of new ones on the way from the U.K.

Have you talked to anyone at your local Yamaha shop or is it the same shop you're using?

I stopped in there to buy some Plexus polish for the windshield during one of the rallies. I honestly have no idea about their parts or service departments but they should have Genuine Mikuni main and pilot jets in stock for somewhere around five or six bucks each. Bring in your old jets for comparison so they know which series of jets you need and if they want more money politely tell them to go pound sand ... then negotiate!
