Rick's Cycle Parts is out of business. Carry shims in all the sizes you might need. I wouldn't measure more than .oo5 but that is the thickness change in the next size shim. You will get used to it being a small change if you do your valve adjusting about once a year. It kind of looks like you don't have enough shims. Record the clearance of each valve so you can buy shims in advance. If you increase your clearance from .oo5 to .o1o then you risk power loss valve damage and increased noise.

adjust valves about once a year

I got a message that said something mystical about going from a .270 to a .280. I don't know where it went but, it was just too many questions at once. I'm thinking of having to replace the valve seats and guides.

You don't have to even think about replacing the valves or redoing the heads until you run out of shims, and you are a long ways from there.

Some people like to set the valves on the loose side so as not to have to set them as often. You have two shims to choose from, usually, that will still be in range, or close to it.

There is an excel spreadsheet around here somewhere that will calculate which shims you need and shows you two possible shims for each valve.

Also, in 1980 Yamaha changed the intake setting to 'reduce valve noise'. Exhausts are the same for all XS11's.
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...
