My local dealers, both Yamaha and others, were of no help and if they had them, they would have sold them and not swapped. Good for you.

I would be very careful not to scratch the cam lobe if you use the screwdriver method you described. My tool worked fine in all valve positions.

The cool thing about the screwdriver trick is that it is not on the lobe. But yeah, have to be careful for sure.

My local dealer has some aftermarket at $20.50 a pop. Needless to say, I didn't give them another thought. They will be hard pressed to sell me a new bike with this kind of marketing.

I'll have the list verified sometime today...
SOMEone keeps getting into our garage and tearing apart engines and doesn't tell the librarian what they check out and return...

There is a fairly accurate list on the first page of this thread... and if they didn't use any shims last weekend... it is current...

            $20.50!?!?!?!
            WTF?
Most of the places around here will trade for a moderate cost... or sell the shims for MUCH less than that...

The valve shims from a late 90's Ford Taurus SHO are also 29mm. It is actually a yamaha engine! Just in case you need one in a hurry they work. I have one in my bike!

                  rjf2369,

                  Welcome to the forum.

Glad to see you are learning to improvise. That is a common trait among XS owners.

I have a 79F waiting in the wings for some of the leaves on my money tree to grow back before I dig into it. Floggin' a 79SF first. Started out in better shape.

Good luck and welcome again...Good tip..

                      Shims from Canada at ebay

                      ( 1518) - ebay http://stores.shop.ebay.com/Steves-C...__W0QQ_armrsZ1

I bought 3 shims for $4 each about 3 weeks ago and the postage was under $2. Ask sbaas about shipping prices in a message from ebay though. When I first bought these, ebay calculated $5 shipping for each shim and sbaas has to change that when you make the purchase. I found several shims in all sizes.

Hey has anyone tried to trade shims wut with their lacal Yamaha shop? I went and asked and I left with the four shims that I needed. They wanted me so leave a deposit, but I hade to order something so they just took that. The next day I took the old ones back.

Some local shops will trade shim for shim... but most of us have found that many of them want more money AND the exchange... so if you have several to exchange... the library is the best bet, but if you just one or two to exchange... sometimes cheaper just to pay the extra.

Sounds like you have a good one there!

                            Need a 320 shim

I have just about every other size, but of course I need a 320. Any chance the library has one? Thx Rick

Does anyone have the following shims:
                                1- 270,
                                1-290
                                1-285?

I have 1-305 and 2-295's to trade for.
Or could pay for them if you prefer.

                                Thanks in advance
