Thank you Kat! ... for managing this handy little endowment. It's probably a bit of a PITA but I think most people appreciate John's and your efforts.

It's a really good idea... wonder who came up with it?

Tracking might be a good idea for those interested... it is $3.30 US...

Our post office is apparently inept...

I've covered the cost for those who never received their shims... but can't do that again... gets a bit pricey...

There is a shim library list in this thread that I will update as the need arises...

        Thanks

          Alert!

It seems that Yamaha, in true Japanese fashion, made all of our bikes fairly close to the same tolerance, meaning that all of our bikes have nearly the same shims in them.

It seems most shims in our bikes are around 285-290, with the odd variation. This means that we always need the thinner and thinner shims, which the library is always a little short of.

There is a set of 104 29mm shims on Ebay which consists of mostly the thinner shims!

This set also has some 'in-between' sizes, that we normally never see.

          Ebay item number: 280319708496

Considering that 104 shims would normally cost about $520, it may be a good deal for the library to pick them up, with our help of course.

Also, if I read the ad right, Ford Taurus SHO's use these same shims andFord sells them cheaper? May be worth checking into.

Thre is also a set of 24 shims at $25 right now, but it is the more common sizes.

                Shim Swapping

                Hi,

                I'm looking for 4 285's and 1 260. I have 4 290's and one 280.

I looked at your post of the inventory and see you have the 260 and a couple 285's....Any help would be appreciated. I'll pay the postage both ways, no problem. Please let me know.

                Thanks
                Gary

Well, I was one of the ones bidding on them. Derwat and I were going to go halfsies on the set, but they went higher than we wated too.

We should have got a few of us together to get them.

Hey Gary, someone just asked for the only 285 I have... I can swap out the 260 for you if you're still interested... but might be cheaper for you to exchange them at a local motorcycle shop?
Please PM me if you would still like to trade with the library... sorry I couldn't be of more help...

Yeah... it would have been nice... but it's all good... With my luck... we'd get that set and never need those sizes again...

                        Need Two Shims .300 & .260

Must be spring and the flurry of shim requests are on! Of course being NY, I rode Thursday in 60 degree temps and its in the 20's and snowing/blowing all day so it's a good time for tune ups.

I need two shims (.300 & .260) but will send back a .270 & .280 they will replace to keep the inventory going. Please contact me and let me know if you have those sizes and how to arrange for payment/shipping and where I send the returns to.
                        Thanks!

There are some shims listed on E-Bay #110371095877 that expire at 15:39 PDT today. I will try to win them, so if no one else will please not bid maybe we can get them cheap and I will donate them to the shim library.

I was fortunate enough to borrow the shim tool from a local fellow XSer. But you can use a small screwdriver stuck between the cam shaft and the edge of the lifter outside edge (beyond the shim). I had to do this on the No 1 intake valve as the tool just did not fit there for some reason.

As for the shims, I found a local bike shop had them and sold me all I needed for $2 a piece. Interestingly the local yamarobbers did NOT have any.
